A conversation in the mind

Friend Or Frenemy

by Claire Tennant

A was having a lousy cup of tea. I really wanted whiskey and a box of tissues! My mind was in a muddle. The voice in my head waded in with both feet.
"So, you hate his guts, right?" I nodded.
"But not enough for him to die?" I took a deep breath.
"What is it about him you detest?" I smiled and thought.
'Give it a rest' but no, the inner voice continued.
"Well, be honest. Has he not shown kindness?"
I nodded remembering, then thought, 'What DO I hate about him?' then smiled
'Transparency. One minute, I'm his mate, the next it feels like he is shoving me in the grate. To take a match and burn me. Was this my fate? I cannot understand him.'
"He might be unhappy."
'That's not my problem!'
"He could be sick again; remember your reaction last year? It sounds like love to me."
'Don't be ridiculous. I want a real man.'
"Define real man. They all get hungry, or confused, go quiet, even angry and nasty. And yes, they get sick from time to time."
Now I was confused. Oh, heck I reached for a glass and gave into temptation. Whiskey and tears.
