Empowered by Protest Rally
by Jesse James Doty
Last Saturday, March 8th, Connie and I went to a rally to celebrate International Women's Day. The rally was also in protest of what our president is doing to all the disenfranchised people in our country.
We arrived early and eagerly watched as the rally grew into many hundreds of people, all holding hand-made signs saying slogans like, “Put Trump and Musk into Guantanamo Bay.” Another favorite of mine was a sign that said, “Women deserve the same Rights as Guns.”
I held a sign that said, “Silence equals compliance.” It spoke to me since that is how I feel about everyone hiding their head in the sand. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
I felt empowered and exhilarated to be a part of history as we waved and shouted to the people driving by in their cars on the 101 Highway. Most of them were holding their thumbs up and honking, or showing a peace sign salute with their hand.
It was great to be a part of the Human Rights movement firsthand, knowing we put our ideology into action.
Connie and I are on the same team and agree that all people should have equal rights.
The thrill of knowing all of these people feel the same way about the current president is palpable. As the crowd kept growing, our excitement exceeded all of our expectations.
My voice grew hoarse from yelling, “Yay!” to passerby driving their cars and honking and waving to the multitudes on the sidewalk. Many people were taking photos and videos of this incredible scene. A friend of Connie’s said she had seen us in a video on a local online newsletter.
We felt empowered knowing we had made a difference.
A certain person who helped organize the rally gave out fliers telling us when the next rally would be. They will be held on the first Saturday of each month and the second Wednesday of each month.
I will step up and be counted to go to every rally, doing my part to make a difference in this Country. Together, we can move mountains.
