A story about Debi

Birthday Poem Writer

by Terry Broxson

There is a contest where you can write a flash story as a secret admirer to a FanStory member. There are some excellent entries; take a look.

I want to tell a true tale about the lady who has become the unofficial "Birthday Poem Lady" of FanStory—Debi Pick Marquette.

It would be hard not to notice her poems wishing members happy birthdays this year. They are well-written poems packed with things we learn anew about the birthday person.

I know very little about writing poetry. Styles, meter counts, and poem types are beyond my ability.

I think it would be a challenge to choose a style or type of poem, add a lot of personal information about the subject, and still get the meter and other poetry requirements correct.

This month, Debi had a bunch of poems to write. They have been fun for the recipient and readers as well.

She posted one this morning for Annmuma.

But here's what you don't know. While working on these poems, she has been back and forth to the Mayo Clinic for medical treatment. And while at home lying in bed this week to finish the poems, she has COVID-19.

Debi wants to post the poems as the clock strikes midnight on the person's birthday. I'm thinking that's her way of wanting to be first to wish someone a happy birthday.

If you review one of these poems, she will thank you for reading. I think it should be the other way around.

Can I nominate her for the Writer of the Year?

PS: We can always find a couple of naysayers on almost any topic on FanStory. Such is the nature of a writing site with free speech.

And then there are times like this at a surprise 80th birthday party this weekend for Annumma. Her daughter framed Debi's birthday poem. This is the text I received from Annmuma:

"I love the plaque with Debi's poem. We set it on an easel so everyone (80 attendees) would pass it sometime during the evening. I must say it was an attention-getter, and people were impressed with FanStory friends!"

It feels good to be one of those friends.
