I am not a free verse fan. This is the first six stars that I have given to a free verse poem. Congratulations on your first post and your win. I'll be checking in on you.

A contest winning verse? It seems appropriate to be rewarded for your efforts as it has such a feeling of presence and nostalgia intertwined throughout. That simultaneous feel brings it to be one concrete poem not easily dismissed as trivial. Congratulations!

When I saw the final vote and your poem was nearly twice that of second and third (mine was third), I wondered what was so special with your poem that the rest of us couldn't come close to it. So, I read your poem. If you had not won this contest, I would have been screaming, "Fixed!" This is a most exceptional piece and well deserved for this win. -Bill Stephenson

Congratulations on your initial post.
The first thought came with the artwork where I thought The Sisterhood of Ya-ya.
How many times have you massaged this piece to have its debut be so
delectable? If it was on a bone, I'd take it home. It's wonderful. I don't have a bonus star to give, but it deserves. Can I share this?
As your first release... I desire to read your second. Please, don't take five months. I am thirsty to peruse every word you pen.

Wow, what a compliment! I wrote the poem in one sitting, if you can believe it. But I did have to go back and edit, sometimes my inner perfectionist comes out and I keep rewriting. I am so happy my poem has been well-received as my poetry is often confessional and person. And...I just posted a second poem for another contest. It seems contests motivate me (lol).

The imagery in this poem is reach and fascinating. I love the blend and twist of family and country in a love-hate relationship that this poem tries to expound. Well done, my friend. Good luck in the contest.

Yes, very much biographical and bitter but love-hate, all the same. Thank you so much for the lovely comments and the six stars. You are much appreciated!

Welcome! Congratulations on your first post! I enjoyed reading your poem which was full of detailed descriptions and imagery. I'm youngest of five Ina big Greek extended family. Eating around the table together was such a pleasure for which, I'll always ve grateful!

Best wishes for the contest!

Big families are beautiful, as are the dinners (particularly on holidays). Thank you for stopping by to read my poem and for the lovely compliment!

Ciao mystery poet, you now have 10 votes.

All entries were excellent but yours packed the hardest punch.

Love all the impactful expressions, descriptions you used to put this piece together.

I couldn't help thinking that maybe the Waltons family was just a big lie.

The world is brutal out there, family should be a secure refuge for us all.

My father was a brother of three brothers so our family tree is big but we are not united.

When my paternal grandparents were alive they keep the family united but after their death there were no more family reunions for Easter, Christmas, birthdays.

The only time the three families catch up , is for a funeral.

I also see that family , the pillar of a society, is crumbling away .. in the robotic ,AI future that awaits us , interpersonal relationships won't matter ..

Age care facilities with robots that even emanate heat ....WTF .

Robot pets

Robot lovers

    Ha, you know, it's a tangible fear...robots as caretakers. I don't think it's too far-fetched.

Unfortunately when the grandparents pass on, it seems families tend to fracture, at least mine did...on both sides.

One learns to be their own best company, I suppose.

Thank you for reading my work and for the conversation!

Welcome to Fanstory. Wow!!! You have crafted a brilliant poem on the topic of family. It is an exceptional first milestone post by a highly talented poet who has woven together a quilt of well-crafted metaphors that stitch together the history and bloodlines of what a family is and shall always be. an ancestral tapestry passed on from one generation to the next.

Well done

Eugene

I can't properly express how much I enjoyed this piece, or how formidable a contest entry it is. For your first post, author, this is quite the splash in my book. ;) Great job. Welcome, and I wish you the best of luck in the contest. It would be my pick for the winner.

"My sister, that mirror I cannot break,
wears her childhood like a locket around her neck,
while I've swallowed mine whole, a stone in my gut.
Father is the clock on the wall, always watching,
always ticking toward some inevitable hour
when we'll be forced to reckon with his silence."

This stanza for me was so profound, and relatable. Thanks for writing.

Congrats on your first milestone, and what an incredible verse to mark it! It's deeply poignant and palpable with some wonderful and stirring imagery, like the moths in the second stanza, the ticking clock, the cleansing water of absolution. You fulfil the prompt perfectly with your focus forever on those family members "like a country with contested borders," a bloodline from which you can never escape. And then the tapestry of our ancestors and those who will follow us. So much thought, imagination and heart have gone into this excellent and highly memorable free verse. Well done and good luck:) Debbie
