Oh no. I remember in the sixties being friends with a little girl who's father was black. Prejudice is ugly and gets in the way of a lot of things. Our friendship was no exception. Thank you for sharing this. Gretchen

The guy who was stealing ear rings was dangerous and no doubt went to prison somewhere. Or made a big change in life. I went to school with a person like him. However, he grew out of some of it.
Doing somewhat better, not out of the woods yet. Good one, Beth

Nice hook to finish! A shiny one. It's interesting the generational racism that we've gone through over the years. I'm kind of in league with the Christian reformers of the 1800's, who knew what it meant to see in the Bible like Paul who said, "We are all from one blood, one nation." I grew up in a northern, city and let me tell you many of those same no mixed marriages and prejudice existed. Today, I go to a church that is 20% black with mixed marriages, etc... I like how you take something from a real life experience to create an interesting plot that continues.

This is a fascinating chapter to read in your life history, Beth. It's hard to believe how black and white people were separated like they were, it was cruel and unjust. I'm glad things aren't like how they were now. An excellent well written piece, I enjoyed reading it.

A really interesting and entertaining read here about school and college and young meaningful friendships beginning to take shape against a backdrop of a changing social situation.

Another fascinating insight into life in the USA during those years of your early adulthood. I am looking forward to the next chapter to see what happened. Well written, Beth.

This is such an important chapter in your book. It would open the eyes of today's kids and the world they are living in now. And it will remind us older adults about how far we have come. Even in liberal Portland, OR, there was an extremely racist past. It wasn't until 1951 until they repealed the ban against interracial marriage. Even in the late 1970's when my husband and I were dating, we got some severe looks.
I'm glad you got to meet all kinds of people in college and it was the first step to how much the world widened for you!

You left us hanging, something only writers who create suspense do, and I can understand the mentality back then, it exists in my teen and I grew up in the late 70's 80's, I'm glad it is no longer the case.

I think the worst thing that I've found with Christianity is that one can't admit to weakness, such as being attracted to other people, it does, however talk about faithfulness, mind you, your innocence was condemned, where, oh where is the discernment? But we all have secrets, and it would be nice to have a friend, thank God for Jesus, well done, blessings Roy
