You are right that this pristine white house looks like a Southern Plantation house not an insane asylum. It seems love has brought both back from insanity. Maybe the door will open out for them now.
Good luck in the contest.

You're right, the photo looks like a southern plantation estate. Your poem is powerful. I read it many times before I really think I understood what your message was about your experience and your journey from darkness to light. Whoever Vera is, this poem is a real tribute to her and to your strong spirit. Good luck in the contest.

This is such a powerful poem with its strong potent narrative. I particularly admire:
'Her arms embrace me back to sane.'
With best wishes, Writeling

I thought I knew who the anonymous author was that penned this loquacious, frolicking free verse poem but I checked and I was wrong.
I already knew of the diabolical history of the Chattahoochee Mental Hospital.
It ranks right up there with the atrocities perpetrated against the residents of Pennhurst Mental Hospital in Spring City, Pennsylvania.
Well penned, informative notes.
Best wishes to you in the contest.

The old Georgia Insane Asylum at Milledgeville is another nightmare in a good land. About 30,000 graves of inmates over centuries of existence...the state prison was nearby...excellent post...

Wow, there but for the grace of God...! What a story and how graphically related, I'm very impressed with this poem. Dividing it into "Assaults" adds to the mounting horror each new wave brings which is then contrasted by the final tenderness; an outstanding tribute to your friend.
I would just question line 9, "the this jail."
Best of luck with competition, Peter

What an interesting story you tell here, of the man who was illegally imprisoned for so long in what is not the gorgeous southern mansion it appears to be. I wonder how common this story is? Too common, would be my guess. That's where Brown's Law came from I suppose - it is now very difficult to get someone locked up in a mental hospital.
The antiseptics "masking decades of despair..." Well done!

It is scary to think of losing control. And your title is well chosen the place looks regal on the outside. I got a strong sense of the sense of betray and despair of the character in your poem. Your words create a feeling of strong imagery and I felt like I was walking through that place.
Thanks for the history of the hospital campus.
Do you need to loose the "the in the third verse.

This reader is overwhelmed by the presentation of this writer. The descriptions, so well written, make one fear as the patient walks the pathways through the institution. If this is biographical, my heart goes out to you. Yes, the building looks tranquil and inviting but as we know a book can not be judged by its cover. The notes are exquisite to educate the reader. Thank you for sharing.
Peace,
Brigitte

Though this hospital does sound like just about anyone's worst nightmare, it seems it's also the place where you met Vera, obviously the answer to your prayers. You have enough info on the history of the place, as well as your own personal experience, have you considered a book? Meeting Vera would obviously lead to your happy ending!
