Monster-in-law isn't just a movie apparently, it's a way of life for this lady. I think she might be my least favorite type of person in the world because I don't have the energy or patience to put on airs for people and it will end badly. It was definitely a good read though, on to part 2.

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your sticking with the story. My mother was quite a character--a consummate control freak. Cheers. LIZ

I'm delighted you found this fun to read--many found my dark humor was much outweighed by the negativity--especially in part two--part three lightens up. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers. LIZ

I enjoyed this very much. You certainly satisfied your instructions to flesh out your character. Furthermore, the differences between mother and daughter came across strongly, adding spice to the story.

Thanks Katherine!I'm pleased you liked this. If you decide to read the rest--be forewarned that part two is pretty dark; part three lightens the mood. Cheers. LIZ

You have a great sense of humor and it comes through in your writing. I thought this personal tale of a family dinner with your mother had plenty of those barbed moments of criticism of where to place your furniture, how to wash your food, how long to keep it in a tupperware, that is very revealing of the battle for control going on between you and your mother. We see the struggle of a controlling woman to maintain control, and the daughter trying to carve out a space for herself. The wit and humor, as well as the honest, personal voice, make this come alive. estory

The words roll off your tongue effortlessly. Seems your mother have some obsessive-compulsive behavior. I've known a few who would throw food out after two days. And to eat a big meal before going to a dinner. How rude! She manages to slam your husband too. Maybe it's time to give her a dose of her own medicine. On to the next.

Thanks Shari. Thankfully, this is 22 years in the past--parties long dead/divorced. Cheers. LIZ

Ha, is right, Liz. Your story was fun to read and well-written. Your mother likes to come in and take over. Does she take all the credit too? I like the way you used the italics for your thoughts. There are so many funny (in a way that calls attention to the fact that maybe not so funny in reality) parts here. I could see everything as I read this. I don't understand her reasoning of eating at that place before trukey dinner. What an odd thing to do. You did a great job of including all the insights and things that happened without being judgmental.

Thanks for sharing.

So happy to see you again, Jan, aka Eagle Eyes --I'll fix to either stomach's or stomach is. I'm pleased you were amused! Re the turkey dinner: her "reasoning" was a mystery to me too! Cheers. LIZ

Relax? LOL. Why does it always seem like that although everyone's lives are so different, there are undoubtedly the parts that seem the same. They used to ask me why I went at everything like fighting fire and everything had to be perfect. I would just say, "I don't know, ask my dad." But yet he turned me into a clone, afraid I might disappoint him. Thanks for sharing.

A new holiday classic, dear Liz. My mother was much the same. Add, she was without a decent husband to bring any sort of balance, so lived her life vicariously through me. Holidays were always a mishmash of dashed hopes for her. I always tried to cut her some slack because of her unloving marriages. I have that to my credit and it made my table and festivals all the richer.

One small improvement for your consideration.

"...(regarded) leftovers was..." (Blame this on my copy editor. He says don't be lazy, spell it out.) He's a perfectionist, so keep that in mind.

A delightful read from end to end. :)
Sending you my best today as always
Sally xoxo
