Hi Liz,
I think many people today just don't get married. They prefer to live together, I think, so that they will never have to get divorced. Common-law relationships. Sure, they will still have to go through lawyers at "break-up time". But it's not divorce. They reach a settlement, and go their separate ways.
As I read your piece, I thought of poor Jennifer Anniston, and how she lost Brad to Angelina. But there are so many other "losers" in the stardust world. Jennifer O'Neil (1971's Summer of '42) has gone through 9 divorces! Mickey Rooney had 8 marriages, and 6 of them ended in divorce. Why so much failure? These are only the tip of the iceberg.
I think love starts out with infatuation. But at some point, that subsides to various degrees. Other factors must take over... support (emotional security), quality time (family moments), friendship (listening, caring, laughing), teamwork (bringing up the kids, learning new skills, paying the bills, planning for the future), respect (giving each other space, honesty).
I especially liked the part about Cinderella and her Shining Knight.
Nicely penned satire! I enjoyed the cheeky rants of "His" and "Hers". People need to enter marriage vows with their eyes ... WIDE OPEN! However, most people are drunk... right in front of the minister!!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Hello Liz,
Another great piece from your fertile mind. Well done gal. I guess it's universal, this searching for the perfect mate. Unfortunately, once we've found them, we realize that they, like us, have faults. Not only that, but they develop wrinkles and snore and fart and stuff. Whatever happened to Camelot? I guess Lancelot slipped in somehow. Thanks so much for sharing gal.

Alas, some people are always restless for someone "better" who will magically make life perfect. So pleased you enjoyed my parody "play."

Well, at least, in all the self-psychoanalysis both HE and SHE came to the exact same conclusion. That's best for both of them and saves the difficulty in trying to figure out what went wrong. It seems the commitment wasn't there.

Love between two people who are unrelated is highly unlikely, I can remember the amount of times I was "in love" when young, I think I was in love with being in love. I could never stop loving my wife now, nor my kids/grands. But this is clever dear Liz, love fault laying, that's how it is. Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

I have a feeling that 'not the one' is very common and nobody is really at fault. Of course, there are situations where somebody is definitely at fault. I'm sorry I missed this the first time around, but glad I caught it now.

A great job, funny, sad and so true. So many people go through "dry runs," thinking and hoping that this person can be "the one." Their fantasy idea of the ideal and the real person in front of them eventually hit the dirt.
It reminds me of an acquaintance, I once knew her eyes would light up when a single man was within 10ft. I think it took her longer to find the "one" for marriage and kids because she was so obvious about her goal with every guy.
Well done in presenting both sides of the coin.

God! That was hard hitting .Witty no doubt ,but with a strain of sadness. 'we just didnt call one day ..and the next day....' This was the saddest ,the drifting apart.
This would make a great performance

Aw, come on! Way to go to bring this forward before I spent every last six-which is not at all unusual for me by Wednesday!

This is so sad it's hysterical! And vice versa...

The repetition is just spot on! We are programmed by society to search, woo, identify and lock in THE ONE!

Screw the glass slipper! Who needs it?
And what Prince is Charming ALL THE TIME!?

"Charming," pre-coffee is tantamount to justifiable homicide!

As ALWAYS your wit and wisdom are the best "couple" around...

Show me a flawless marriage and I'll show you two liars.

Some make "ever after" on occasion, with a "happily" tossed in to make gnashing of teeth and biting of tongue bearable!

Awesome, Liz!

Karenina

Exactly! Angels are great in holiday pageants but hardly a one can be found in any given marital coupling!

    LOL...

That's pretty authentic, and a good write, two perspectives of the same event, told with wit and humour. One never really knows another person before some sort of commitment. Afterwards there is always a measure of disillusionment and facing up to reality: no-one is going to make life magical all the time. Often the truth is simply that nothing happened, and reality just set in. Thoughtful and thought provoking despite being light- hearted to read.
