This is a beautiful piece of writing that is engaging to read and would make a wonderful memoir! The carefully-selected anecdotes from kindergarten seem to indirectly sum up the whole essence of being a child. Well done!

This true story wetted my eyes as I read it. It took me back to Parklea School in NSW Australia. Your story and mine are running on the same parallel track of our childhood's epiphanies. How could a Catholic kindergarten dare and let its schoolchildren pay for its daily bottle of milk. (At Parklea it was completely free.)
How can a teacher watch such an innocent daily life show without feeling her /his heart bleeding? When I discovered a pupil of mine or someone's really in poverty I have always helped. But the most grievous thing has been your innocent psychological state of mind which has been intacted. You will always remember that kind little boy but that dolorous life behaviour will always remain. In my case as the son of an Italian poor farmer's son my school teacher Mr H. D. Bell and his schoolboys gave a Christmas toy and that has been my unique toy all my lifetime! May God bless you and thank you for sharing another little great part of our life. Brava!

Namaste Patricia! See foreign people meet throught this site and some become good cultural friends other take only care of the stars which many are not Worth while but ours has all touched our childhood's epiphanies which are much more then the rest because our souls have gone back to pure innocence. May your day be bright as ever , dear friend! Blessings. Tony

AND if only there were more of THIS in the world. I truly believe it still exists, because I taught in the public schools for 13 years and saw it, but is there enough of it? NO. Children have a very tough time understanding the reasoning and blessed is the donor in the story, but also that little boy! I am sure these were kindnesses that will sit in your heart forever. Great story and great job sharing it with us!

Yes, they will sit in my heart forever, Wendy. Thank you for your warm responses to my writing. I appreciate you. I sent "Eve's story to "The Sun Magazine" this morning. It will probably be at least three months before I hear anything, but that's okay. I did the part I was supposed to do.
Thanks for all your support.

I enjoyed your sweet story. There's good flow to it. But even more, there's a special message. What a kind gesture for someone to have donated to your account so you could have the milk. And now you are sharing that treasured memory. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully, Jan

Comment from Gloria ....
This is such a heartwarming story, Patricia. I absolutely detest milk, but for some reason you almost managed to persuade me to have a warm feeling about it.
Excellent true story and so well written and thank goodness for the generosity of anonymous donors.
Wishing you much luck with the Contest Committee with this gem.

Thank you, Gloria. It's funny how important milk was to me then, and now I'm vegan and don't consume dairy. I appreciate your wonderful comments and six-star rating. Thank you.

It's a very interesting tale from school - how incidents such as this with our school fellows impact our young lives - told with candour and dignity and righteous anger !

A lovely picture, but am I seeing right? All girls? Wow! Girls are not so easy to raise it seems to me. More challenging it must have been for your mum. I would have loved it though.
Your story is sweet! Some people show up just right on time. God sees to that often.

Drew,
My parents had ten girls and then they had their boy. I don't know how my mom did it. Thanks for your review and comments.

S&L,
Oh, my. I can't imagine what that might have been like for you. I know when I was in school and that age, I would have been oblivious to anyone in your predicament. I was in a middle-class setting, lucky that way, and caught up in my own worries and concerns - petty though they were.
I am so glad someone else was watching out for you.
Well, now that I think about it - I did do a few kind things, I guess. I just don't remember knowing which kids were more well off than the others.
This was a great story. Good luck in the voting! The telling was super. Great job!!
