I enjoy the little squirrels too. They're often frolicking on our two air conditioners, frolicking and... my husband yells, "Get a room!" Lol.
I tell him that we should be thankful for the wildlife represented here, in the concrete jungle of Queens, NY.
We have a lot of tree cover on our street, so they haven't been fully spooked yet by the red-tailed hawks who would like to make a meal of them. In other areas of NYC with fewer trees, that's why we don't see too many squirrels. They're smart little cuties.
But my husband is really an animal lover and has rescued several squirrel babies.
I didn't win the contest either, but it was fun trying.
"Chirping a hungry song," yes I have heard them chirp, but only rarely. How nice that you have your own squirrel! If I sit in front of my building for awhile, they will beg from me, too.
Very sweet poem!

So happy you can find some wild life, animal that is, in the city. I actually have three squirrels that frolic about especially in the morning. Thanks for your read and comments. I agree about the writing challenges being enjoyable, even if one doesn't win.

Thank you. We have squirrels, pigeons, sparrows, mourning doves, feral cats (sometimes) and an occasional flock of parakeets -- long story. Lately, the birds of prey are also attracted to the metropolitan area -- the red-tailed hawk and one other, I think, falcons, or maybe I have them mixed up with another bird. There are deer and occasionally, bears in the suburbs. In depressed areas there may be wild dogs, but it's not too common anymore. It's amazing, what thrives in an urban environment.
