Wow... This is a major theme I have seen played out too many times...nursing being one of those situations when you cross from attempting to heal to assisting with comfort measures prior to pending death... Clever the way you played this out! He needed to save her...she wanted to ease his mind...the clincher being she was sending a "ditto" out to Jesus... I've had stalwart atheists stick to their guns...and some who in their last breath discovered faith...(or hedged their bets!)--- I always kind of hoped they meant it. --- review number fifteen reporting for duty! --Karenina

Loved this story of conflict. Not only were you able to capture the conflict between the husband and wife, but also his inner conflict once she was gone. Very well done.

That was written very well, Liz. Is there? Isn't there? It doesn't matter what side of the fence you lie, you will know one way or another after you die. If there is nothing, you won't know, for that very reason. But, if God exists and that light is the stairway to Him, you will know that for sure. So, you will have to die to find the answer. I'll hang on a little while longer, but I'm more than a little hopeful I find something. Well done, my friend. :)) Sandra xx

Seems like God has been sending you Christians ever since that experience in college! I smiled at Jim because I probably had those same thoughts (when I was in college, too!) We were given books to read - seminars on how to "share the Lord." And now, I see how much that minimized God. And the methodology seemed to come from something like Amway. So Liz, I apologize for all the Christian commercialism you suffered. But I still believe that God came to redeem the world as Jesus. But I can't claim to know if someone is "saved" - just that Jesus knows and that's all that matters. I should just treat everyone as if they are already saved because each human has been made in His image. Their own relationship with God is not for me to judge. But if you have any questions, you know a bunch of us here would be happy to try to answer.

You really bring the contrasts between faith and doubt to a head in this piece, and you do it all in monologue, first from the Christian husband, and then from the doubting wife, and you also make this about feelings. They love each other. We feel this in the compassion they have for each other. They want each other to be happy. That is their primary motivation. Still chocked full of that wonderful personality of yours and lots of humorous little bits strung in here and there liven it up as well. estory

This is an interesting script with a twist as things were just as he had feared they were. It will forever be an unanswerable question as far as the bright light, i suppose.

There's a quote I remember, I'll make my decision to convert, when I'm approaching my final hour, thus thinking I'm cleverer than God, the problem is one cannot fool God, otherwise He's not God, and we're all fooled, but I don't believe that fo a minute, I could share similar stories. But getting back to this, you writing is very clever, as indeed are you, sensitively and creatively written, revealing your wise and knowledgeable heart. Well done, blessings Roy

Hello Elizabeth, a beautiful Thursday to you. As someone who is neither an Atheist or a Christian (but somewhere in the middle, on the fence), I really enjoyed your script. I enjoyed having a glimpse of both point of views. Interesting dilemma the both find themselves in. Good writing, have a great day!

Jim is based on my Best Man, a Christian widower, but Diana is based on me. Chuck intends to convert me on my deathbed--to which I responded--how will you know whether it was genuine or just to comfort you. Indeed I deal with the subject often; I am tormented by the prospect that God exists given I consider him to be monstrous. Cheers. LIZ

The beginning has the reader joining in with the husband's euphoria and then his hand wringing doubt.

When she "speaks" she says there is a blinding light - but she doesn't know if there is life after death. If she's "talking" and she has been through the light - I mean she's kind of answered the question. So I'm confused with that. Or maybe I'm missing something. It's well written though.

Thanks for stopping by. Neurologists propose scientific explanations for the light in NDEs; Diana thus wonders. Cheers. LIZ

I wonder if you got any flack on this from the Bible Belters? Poor Jim. He'll never know and that torment will be his Hell. That his wife stayed with him when he turned all preachy is a tribute to her tolerance. She wins the game, hands down.

Thanks Shari--your remarks resonate--my Best Man inspired Jim--he intends to convert me on my deathbed--to which I said, you'll never know if I was pretending in order to comfort you. A wish-ful thinking Christian reviewer interpreted the ending as Diana having accepted Jesus. Cheers. LIZ
