Hooray! I get to be reviewer # 15!!
So let me get this straight, at Emerald Estates, they want you to go green by not having green lawns and weeds? That would be okay by me.
I would prefer a rock garden except that here everything grows - we have so much rain - trees grow like weeds. Sigh. No pesticides allowed either because it could get into our water supply - the lake!

With tongue in eponymous cheek, I dub my grass-challenged grounds "Emerald Estates," wherein I, Empress of all things weedy, spend my days meticulously deferring yardwork, so as to bequeath the privilege to the owner who succeeds me subsequent to my passing to the fallow pastures of the netherworld.

Thanks for the virtual blue! Cheers. LIZ

Hello, Elizabeth, I do enjoy your sense of humour, and this piece of writing has more twists and turns than a cut rattlesnake (to use an Australian idiom)! very much enjoyed it!

With this draught, we do not have green lawns anymore if we are waiting for rain. Anyway, you are right about those green green lawns, I have a neighbor who just has a small patch and it is the greenest in the street. when they treat the lawn little signs go up that a chemical is used. I do not think the animals can read.

I enjoyed your informative post, Liz. You covered the topic well. I like the bold phrases for emphasis. I understand all the implications of having a perfectly manicured lawn--the cost, the work, the sprays etc. I like your idea presented at the end. I agree with you about weeds--what is a weed in certainly influenced by the individual's preferences. It seems that many in a neighborhood are in competition to have the greenest lawn free from any weed or inconsistency in height etc of the blades of grass. I have seen some xerioscaping lawns that use very little or no water. Some are ok, and others return to their natural state after a while if not taken care of properly.
Respectfully, Jan

"Going Green" is a treat to hear a little more about grass in lawns, a garden with guarded plants, and weeds that are considered most desirable in a spot or two. I appreciated your telling facts and general comments.

Explaining the phenomenon of lawns and gardening through dictionary definitions with those little humorous pieces of personality thrown in allows us to compare our success in maintaining our lawns. It certainly is a struggle, a never ending battle. Cudos for not using chemical fertilizers and weed killers. I try to stay as organic as possible. Nature is kind of good at taking care of itself, but you have to balance it out if you want those 'planned spaces'. estory

Having had much experience with weeds, I have in my old age come to consider ANYTHING green is good, especially after my daylilies die back and the weeds remain, providing a nice green contrast to our dry creek bed. What waste money on them? They eventually die back as well. Thanks for the laughs and the education!

I enjoyed reading this .I totally support the 'weed'theory of yours. Weed is an unwanted plant ,then any plant growing wild becomes a weed? Your selection of definition is fun.

The British have the reputation of having the best gardens in the world. The greenest lawn, colourful borders all year long, created in an apparantly unstructured fashion. I also adhere to the 'a weed is a valuable plant in the wrong location' belief, which actually adds significantly to the "English country garden."

Good thing I'm not British--I'd have been shipped out long since for crimes against gardens. Cheers. LIZ
