It sounds like a rude awakening regarding your finances. The loan companies have always targeted the young because they believe they have a long life ahead of them to sort it out, but it sounds as though you were in pretty dire straits! Obviously you survived, or you wouldn't be writing this now, but I'm sure it was really hard at the time. No nits that I can see!

Looking back, it sounds very hard. At the time, I just went with the flow and didn't worry about it very much. It was an adventure. There was never a time I regretted getting married.

They always say that if you have lived and loved that first, five years of your marriage you'll be okay. You were married 61 years, so that proved the quote.

We went though some crazy stuff those first few year. We survived it and it is fun to remember it now.

I stressed out when I read all your financial woes. Nice use of world events at the time to bring into a bigger context. Bravo to you for handling all those debts. Can't wait to hear how you paid everything off.

We certainly had some money worries in the beginning. It took a while for us to get out debt. The first apartment was a nightmare. Thanks for reading. I appreciate your stars and comments.

A most interesting insight into young married life in another era when expectations were in many ways so different to what they are today - some things never change though - live bills and cramped apartments! an enjoyable read - I particularly like the plain-speaking- the forthright style

Thank you so much for the review and comments. Things change and new problems emerge. 2020 is very different from 1956. Some people believe those were the happy days. Other think those times sound like a nightmare. I appreciat you continuing to read.

Life had to be hard back then and then I'm sure the babies would soon be coming, they usually were. I can only imagine.
.You weren't and Ike fan, so I didn't ask you how you voted. (weren't AN Ike fan)

-The first paragraph provides a detailed image of the apartment and leads into why opening that door could cause a leak in the apartment below?
-"old fashion" should be old fashioned
-seems the landlords were rather busy-bodies
-"you was the one" should be you were the one
-"you lived in a one room" seems to be missing a word
-"it.When" should be it. When
-Interesting and captures those times spot on. Good recapituation of life during that era.
My reviews are mere suggestions. Feel free to use anything that provides assistance and/or chuck the whole shebang.

This is another beautifully written story of a young woman married and learning how to deal with the troubles that often come along. Clearly love conquers all and you both stayed together. You are doing a terrific job with this and as I always say, I anxiously look forward to the next chapter.

You've painted a grim picture of the past if you compare it with the easy time we have of it now. I live in Australia in a small country town that has runs of 40 degrees and over and wonder how we ever survived without air conditioning and automatic washing machines and wonderful refrigerators and freezers and, and. The list goes on and on. And the debt. One of my friends described it as 'the black worry in my guts,' but the great part was that you and your husband worked it out together and didn't throw in the towel. You described the apartment so well I could picture it in my mind's eye, certainly not a luxury suite. Looking forward to hearing more of your life's adventures.

Thank you so much for the review. From where thing are now, looking back I wonder how we handled it as well as we did. I guess its good when things are hard you're young enough to handle them.

Wow your story flows so easily, and you are bringing things up the proves maturity for that young age. Also I admire the man you married. Now days husband don't support wives to continue their education after marriage. I guess from this point of view the society took a step back... I liked this passafe :"It's a good thing we were young and in love. That kind of stress is what causes ulcers. Money problems often puts too much pressure on marriages. Being older and realizing you were now responsible for another person " Thank you for sharing and good luck with the next chapter.
