I think this is a good entry for the 5-7-5 Cats writing prompt.
This short verse tells a clear story and the picture is a good match.
I wish you luck with the contest.

Well, I can't tell if you are a cat lover or not. You know your cats though. They are the masters of deception, and their speed with the kill is amazing. They are also warm, loving creatures that purr out of contentment. Like you say, they are unpredictable and full of surprises.
Good luck in the contest.

Yes, he's trying to look innocent, but a discerning prey might think, 'Why is that cat lying on such an uncomfortable perch which would be an excellent place from which to pounce on an innocent passerby like me?' But, he might succeed against a dumb bunny.
Your poem was excellent food for thought.

Thank you for the perfect comment and the five stars. In general a mouse has no chance against my four cats; they are skilled hunters.

    You're very welcome.

Not smart enough against four VERY smart cats.
reply by Ogden on 07-Feb-2020
So I guess you don't have much of a mouse problem.
reply by the author on 07-Feb-2020
Live mice? No. Dead ones? Sometimes. When one of my cats catches and kills a mouse, they play a while with it. When they get bored, they place the little corpse proudly on my feet! I call that a mouse problem.
reply by Ogden on 07-Feb-2020
Oh. I agree!. So, is it that you keep them (the cats, not dead mice) because of an otherwise overabundance of live mice?

This is an excellent 5-7-5 poem for the cat's contest
It's just instinct for the cat to sit in wait then pounce.
Great picture of the cat
Well done
Good luck in the contest

Robert, thank you. I see you observe cats too. I have four cats, different ones between them and love to follow their antics. You should see how they dominate my three dogs! BTW, if I counted well, it is a 5-7-5 poem.

I hit the wrong key. It is indeed a 5-7-5. Good luck

That's OK. Thanks for the assurance that I can still count! (Lol)

This is a great entry for the cats 575 poetry contest. You have described cats very well: how they go from happy to ticked off in three seconds. They are truly mysterious creatures. Great job and thank you for sharing.

You have made excellent use of all of your syllables in this realistic poem that addresses the predatory side of those cuddly, purring creatures that we treat like royalty. Descriptive

This feline looks happy and content as it lies in wait -or simply purrs and snoozes the time away - with the final line being a reminder of the cat's instinct

This is certainly a unique "take" on the writing prompt. Other kitties may be soft and cuddly, but this one is one to watch out for. I enjoyed reading this and the picture is a fitting complement.

Thanks a lot, Susan! Good to see I ascertained to the choice of the picture too.
I have four cats. By observing them, the text for the poem followed easily.

Yes, a cat can look like it is doing nothing at all, just sitting there peacefully taking a snooze. But suddenly it comes to life and everything changes in a moment.
Love the picture you have chosen to support your theme.
Good luck in the contest.

I like this! I think you perfectly described a cats personality. You know when that purring will turn. The picture is great too with the peaceful sleep.
