A nice story, Alicia. Your poem takes us through the life of the veteran and has a happy ending after he leaves the service. Well composed free verse and best of luck in the contest. Marilyn

very thoughtful words on this Veteran's Day. In honor of the veterans, there's always a ceremony for them. I had several relatives who served the armed forces. They are very special people.

Hi Rosemary! I'm happy for you. Most people do have friends, family and/or aquaintances in some branch or another. It is a special day. God bless you. Thank you :)

Hi There,
I have read a couple of your postings now, and I like your style. This one is very good. Free verse can be very choppy and disconnected but this one lows nicely and tells a good story. I hope you do well in this contest.

I totally agree with your notes and applaud your sensational artwork selection. I admired your use of the free verse form to tell this story of one dedicated, military man. Cheers and best wishes in the competition- Joan

And such a true picture of the lives of many. I think of the military brats as they're called, traveling from country to country with their family, leaving school after school. There's never time to become rooted. A good poem.

This story is a true one for so many of our veterans. I especially admire the medical corp who stay on the battlefield assisting those who have fallen. All of us back home whom they protect really have no idea what it is like to be part of the horrible conditions of active warfare. We can see the results, however, just looking around at the sad plight of many retired veterans living on the streets. I used to run an assistance program for the homeless and many of them were veterans. They all have a special place in my heart. I'm glad to know the soldier you're writing about came home to a happy situation. Bless them all!

Hi Spangle! Everyone should be loved and have a home at the least, especially those that protect(ed) our country. God bless them all. You're nice. Thank you. Happy Veterans Weekend :)

A very well-written story/poem in tribute to the veterans on remembrance Day. Many young men make it a Lifetime's career to serve their country in war and battle and many suffer the consequences.

Hi Sandra! I had a filmmaker friend that died from brain cancer after retirement from the military in 2016. At his funeral, a few military women were there. The military is very liberal to equality these days. I only know about men that made careers in and outside of the miltary though. But women can do it too. I just don't know any personally.
You're nice. Thank you. Hearts & hugs, Alicia

I have never been a fan of free verse poetry, which to me always seems to be broken up prose. However, being a veteran myself, I do appreciate the sentiment in this work and the effort of the poet to follow and understand our thought processes.

Loved your free verse poem, Alicia! Even though you hate war, you give honor to veterans and tell us one story about one such faithful life. It's like you took a biographical novel and condensed it into a poem!

Hi! I knew a people that made careers in the military. So I had some knowledge about what I was writing. I kept the story middle class, because that is the mass market military enrollment. Thank you. Hearts & hugs, Alicia
