Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the rating system here. Personally I prefer to remove the rating altogether as we just want each other's feedback, not a grade. The rating goes to ranking and hence the need for it. But I prefer to just be given one exceptional a day to award.

This rating does not count towards story rating or author rank.
The highest and the lowest rating are not included in calculations.

I agree about the feedback, Helen -- the rating isn't a grade and shouldn't be used in that respect. But, I just think that since we do need it, as you stated, it should definitely mean something....otherwise, rankings mean nothing. Of course, there is the option, as you say, we could just do away with it because it doesn't really mean anything if not utilized properly.
