Outstanding post, Yvette. If I could, I'd give it seven stars. Bravo! Superbly conceived and presented.
I think the only solution is to limit the number of fives. To me, ten per day sounds reasonable, with no carryover of unused fives to the next day. This will also encourage reviewing, I think.

Thanx for those wonderful stars, Phyllis -- those mean so very much coming from you, ma'am!! :) I tried really hard not to sound too scientific, but it's a hard row to hoe when I'm not in my 'fantasy/sci-fi state-of-mind' -- LOL! :) :) And, as Captain Kirk would say, I have raised my shields because I am expecting some not so agreeable reviews (already started, actually), but I just had to present it....even have a number of folks that have told me this won't change a thing, but, hey? Just puttin' it out there (as my students say - lol!).
And, as we look at the end of the year rolling up faster than I can believe, I wanted to say thanx for always being out there in reviewing my writes and, especially, thanx for your awesome books/novelettes that really provide a wonderful relaxation when I get in from the world of 'teenage education today' - LOL! ;) :) Looking forward to more of them as the New Year barrels in! :) ;) Blessings for 2019! :) Yvette ;):) :)

This is something that I noticed too. It disturbs me a bit. I want no review if it is not totally honest and true to the reader's feelings. On a couple of occasions when I rated less than a 5...I was pounced upon by the writer. One demanded I explain why I rated as I did...the work was only average or less and there were spelling problems. I do not to be cruel or superior, but because I appreciate help. To me, a rating system is not supposed to be just one level.

You make some good points here and all ratings from reviews are subjective, I have had some reviews to say that there is nothing wrong with my poem, but that the reviewer just simply did not like the subject! He he he, it begs the question: 'why did they read it then?'
Reviewing is a very delicate process as all poets think their work is good and although they should not defend their work, poor ratings and reviews hurt. For me it is not about the rating so much as the advice given if a poem needs a little help. I enjoyed your points of view, love Dolly x

You make some good points here and all ratings from reviews are subjective, I have had some reviews to say that there is nothing wrong with my poem, but that the reviewer just simply did not like the subject! He he he, it begs the question: 'why did they read it then?'
Reviewing is a very delicate process as all poets think their work is good and although they should not defend their work, poor ratings and reviews hurt. For me it is not about the rating so much as the advice given if a poem needs a little help. I enjoyed your points of view, love Dolly x

You are too funny with the flashlight analogy! :) ;) Thanx for review, dude -- and, no, you don't need 'bringing back down to earth'....you just wrote (write) beautiful pieces that others only wish they could write! :) :) Your perspectives alone sometimes are noteworthy!! :) :) So, I would consider the 'trolls' to be little green monsters of snowflake jealousy trying to rain on your parade! :) :)
Oh, and I'm writing down your famous quote here -- Holy Crap, Batman - that is SO applicable to SO many different situations/organizations!! :) :) ;) I absolutely LOVE it!! :) ;)

The first thing that crosses my mind is, that you belabor the point to the point of exhaustion. My neck is literally sore from reading this all at one time. You make a lot of good points. You have most definitely investigated these phenomena to the utmost entirety. Personally, I give a lot of thought into what I say in my reviews. But, I am the first to say that, I do not feel qualified to judge other's posts. I am a poet. Not an editor or qualified reviewer. But Fan Story is set up to force me, (yes force), to decide for another writer, how they need to improve their writing skills. I do this because, not having much money, I need to earn member dollars and member cent pump certificates in order to gain reviews to my posts. Some writers post with nothing more than 1 point and 2 cents. I was advised early in my stay on Fan Story, that I should offer some member cents or dollars if, I want to receive the needed reviews that I would like to get. Therefore, I need to review, to earn the needed member dollars required, to post and receive reviews. What I am trying to say is, that the way FS is set up, there is no way to get around reviewing others, even though I do not feel qualified to do so. I do appreciate when someone offers helpful hints at bettering my work. Yet I am just learning myself, and don't always have suggestions to give other writers on this site. So, it is complicated. Although you feel qualified to critique other's work, I do not. I know and understand where you are coming from, and it is a problem that needs to be fixed, but I am not sure what the answers are, to how to fix this 5 star problem. Enough said. Thank you for taking the time to bring up this problem. And I hope Fan Story comes up with a better system. In the meantime, I will do as I do, and hope that others understand.

Yeah - essays really aren't my thing....especially given that I'm used to working for the government and have to take a long time to explain very technical things to bureaucrats who may or, more likely, may not understand what I'm trying to say. ;) ;) And you're right about not feeling qualified sometimes....it is a predicament in which many of us find ourselves. In that case, I either skip or simply point out the SPAGs. :) :) :) I do appreciate your slogging through the wordiness, though, and I'm hoping simply for these essays, as a whole, to be an impetus for at least small changes....we'll see. :) ;) Thanx for everything, Jesse, and Happy New Year from my little corner of the world to yours! :) ;) Yvette :)

You are wonderful on how accepting you are to what I had to say. I, too, am hoping that essays like yours, will help make small changes, at least. If I can't help someone with any suggestions, and I don't think it's up to par, I usually skip it, too.
I hope you celebrate the New Year in your own particular style. I know you will have a great time. I will have a quiet New Year's Eve, listening to music and reading, sitting with my cats by my side. All these bring me comfort and serenity.

I have only been on the website for a little under half a year now, though from what I've seen as a reviewer and writer (especially when it comes to poetry which I just adore) I can say you are not alone nor making stuff up. I really love how into-detail you went with this. You expressed much passion and research behind your idea, as well as personal experience. I have only been on the website for a little under half a year now, though from what I've seen as a reviewer and writer (especially when it comes to poetry which I just adore) I can say you are not alone nor making stuff up. I've seen the same thing you express in this writing and it often confuses me. I really enjoy the deep thought in your solution, and believe with enough backup and negotiation with the creators you could be onto something. Good luck with your ideas and the contest!
