A fine example of blowing one's own trumpet. (Please note this is written by a Wallaby supporter so there may well be a tone of envy in the reply.)
On two points I agree with you wholeheartedly. The first obviously is to sing with you on the praises of your great team. The second is in endorsing people to watch the haka, the ancient Maori pre-battle war dance. It is indeed a sight to behold.

this is a fun essay to read, kiwisteveh, I watched the movie about phar-lap as I am a horse lover, never been a fan of rugby or soccer. I man I used to work with played rugby. he said it was more of a man's sport than soccer, lol. good luck to your all blacks.

Despite the one-sided score line it was an entertaining game and hopefully will inspire a few more Americans to take up this version of 'football'

Very interesting. I guess for a small country, the internal games can be very emotional and create a sense of unity and national pride. When the US basketball team cruise to victory, no one here even notices anymore.

He had a bad hamstring and had to opt out. I'm not a sports fan, but you built up my interest enough to turn on the TV. Nothing but College Football.

Yes, we are happy enough to name ourselves after a flightless, defenceless, fur-covered bird that scuttles around in the darkness probing for bugs and worms!
I think the 'Blacks' appellation comes simply from the original uniform, black jersey, black shorts, black socks. Since they are our most famous sporting team, other sports have taken up similar names hockey - Black Sticks, Cricket = Black Caps etc. Soccer is obviously reactionary - they are the All Whites!
NZ teams traditionally have black prominent in their uniform, even out Olympic athletes and despite it being scientifically proven that it can affect performance through heat absorption.

As you know, Steve, we Aussies claim Pharlap. In fact, a Kiwi has only to cross the ditch to watch a show in Sydney, and if he/she's any good, we claim them. Unfortunately, we can't claim the All Blacks who invariably make out Wallabies look like second raters. They have that invincibility about them that makes our boys wet their pants when it gets close, which isn't too often. The Eagles game will be an exhibition and maybe the Americans may see some of the brilliant free flowing stuff the boys are capable of putting on when given space. Enjoyed the read.

I tried to convince my (Australian) class once that Don Bradman was born in New Zealand. Of course it would have helped if any of them had even known who Don Bradman was!
There are a couple of Kiwi horses in the Cup tomorrow (same class didn't know what the Cup was either!) so maybe we'll throw up another winner for you to claim.

Lucia Valentina is my tip for the cup, former Kiwi, migrated to Oz, and one of the favoured horses. Our top trainer in Melbourne and Sydney comes from NZ, as does his top jockey James McDonald.
It's a fine balance; did the All Blacks inspire or frighten them off the game?

Hi Steve, I too am a great RU fan my friend, Looking forward to the best team in the world popping over here for a hard fought game, I don't wish to make excuses, but please remember, the English side are relatively new as a team, we started rebuilding a year ago and the best result will be next year, so tell your boys to have mercy! LOL.
