Great entry for the contest. You have brought up some really good points bout the question of immigration in an interesting way. Interesting points that, I think that we should ponder. Good piece and good luck with the contest.

I love it. You gave us a story that asks a lot of important questions and gives one of the greatest examples of immigration I've ever read or heard.
The bit about the Smith's house was a very valid and down-to-earth way to look at the problem of immigration.
This is an argument that will go on forever because no one will budge on it or come to a common consensus. I saw a bunch of views that I agreed with in this piece and some I disagreed with.
The writing was superb. Filled with characters that made their point, but were very realistic with human emotions. I know I've told you a million times, but I love how your writing makes the reader think about whatever issue you are addressing and asks valid points.
Excellent work, my friend. Good luck in the contest. Yours is the first I've read and I can already tell the competition is going to be hard this time around.

Thank you very much. It was on my mind for awhile and I rewrote the commentary I first had and made into a story form. That added nearly 700 words, but I'm glad you liked it.

The whites came armed with diseases and the Indians with a mistaken belief in the white deity. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a good read.

Wow. Excellent, graded A. A+ if I may. Teaching about current conditions using history (and logic), and might I add, kindness. Good job. If only it were as simple.

Good morning, class - add comma for direct address
grabbed his marker, and wrote - drop the comma
good use of dialogue to show a conflict of opinions and to register emotion
good use of questions to stimulate debate
others need killings - need killing
segregation in the south - the South
Chucky Cheeses - Chucky Cheese
dad is outvoted - Dad and drop the hyphen in outvoted
they should be a say on how the house is run - have a say
Could you to stop them - Could you stop
I guess the conclusion is we need to give lots and lots of land back to the Native Americans, including, probably, the Smith's house LOL :-) Brooke

This is a topic close to my heart. It is also one that is very complex, with no wrong or right answers. Most of these people are children, some of whom have walked hundreds of miles to get here, under dangerous conditions. I have traveled enough in Mexico to know that it is hard to get by without papers, or at least it used to be. So the people in Central America have these standards too. Anywhere near the border people are stopped, it seems, every few feet. As you get deeper into the country this is not so much the case. What do we owe these immigrants? Some could realistically argue that our interference in their countries contributed to the violence they are now facing, so we owe them something. As Christians, we also owe all human beings decent treatment. Politically it is another story. You mentioned Anne Frank. Her family did leave Germany and settled in Holland, where they thought they would be safe. Ultimately, they were not. There is also the story of the St. Louis, the ship that was allowed to sail from Germany to Cuba, with refugees aboard. As the Nazis knew they would, the Cubans would not accept them. Country after country refused them admission, including this one, with the blessing of patriotic groups. While sympathetic, many people, then as now, had an isolationist point of view. The St. Louis returned to Europe and most of the people perished in death camps. I don't say the situation with the refugees is the same, but it has its parallels. Excellent essay, my friend, not one-sided, based on solid logic.

Hello.
I enjoyed your well written entry. A popular subject, that, yes, everyone gets emotional about. I thought Mr. Strauss covered all the points to be considered very well. I'm certain many of these people are desperate. The worlds a mess and we need God in our lives. We are all responsible for our actions. Two wrongs never made a right, only more wrong. I pray this situation will be addressed with that truth and integrity. Good luck in the contest Debbie

Good essay woth a story mixed in on a very tough issue which is facing the USA. There is little each one of us can do except think of the the promlem. In fact I don't know what to think when one side seems as right as the other.

Excellent discussion, and Mr. Strauss hit all the important points of the situation. His examples are right on target. To allow illegals to stay here is committing suicide for the American people. Just as we killed off the Indians when we thought we had "a right" to this land. It's inevitable that SOMEONE will suffer, so we need to choose... us or them? A very old question, and history DOES repeat, because people never learn from it. "This is different," they say, hoping, not thinking. Sad that people let emotions decide, when it's the mind's job to make good decisions.
