With technology lately, we are seeing a huge decrease in humanity, and you are right how many good and brave people are falling through the cracks of our cruel society. It's time to walk the talk. Talking and doing nothing about it doesn't change a thing. Where are the so-called philanthropic and samaritan people?

I'm glad you revived this article you posted in 2014m because mental illness/health is, in my opinion, high on societies to do list. People stigmatized by mental illness often have gems of genius contained within their DNA. With one in four people world wide having mental challenges, I think it's time for us to reexamine our views, rather than attributing its existence to an overly indulgent generation being punished by either God or too many drugs. The act of doing that is akin to sweeping a genuine existence of a real thing under the rug.

Your essay is well structured and my only suggestion would be more attention paid to the mental decline and the family trauma.

You concluded with a powerful statement that the stigma surrounding mental illness needs to be removed.

One typo in the subtitle:

Who are those that may be geniuses, yet dammed . (damned)

A most poignant read today.

Take the leprosy out and put the accommodations and understanding in... However, it has certainly become more divisive in many ways: some families accepting (if that's the right word...) with meds while some less, resulting in the denial and eventual homelessness as there are no more institutions of which you speak (at least not here in the states)...
Well written with the right focus of the positives attributes and the negative dark sides that exist....

Terribly sad and pointedly true. I wonder how this impacts on you and your children? If you have children. Mental illness digs deep and has strong roots. Good writing on a lousy subject.

This is an extremely interesting and thought-provoking true story. I worked in a mental hospital in the 70s and I have to agree that patients were not really well treated. PTSD is very prevalent now after recent wars and I truly hope they are offered more help and understanding these days.

What a sad and heart-wrenching story. Unfortunately I identify with so many of the aspects of your father's story, in my own life and that of my father. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the honesty in this meaningful write.

this is an excellent write, elpoetry, thank you for sharing this with us, what your father went through was terrible. I am glad his genius allowed him to do so much, but he was lost in the midst of it, looking out at the world through convoluted glasses.

Your biographical essay is not only moving but informative too. You have raised a serious point about the treatment or rather the lack of it that kills so many mental patients. Because of the apathy of the society and the authorities, geniuses perish in prisons or hospitals. 'We must take out leprosy out of mental illness' is a powerful message for all.

You present a very strong statement with the example of a friend who had gone through mental hell. As a biographical picture, it does touch a chord. However, it was more in the nature of an essay than a story.

Thank you for your review. Yes, probably more of an essay. But, still a story, for it is non-fiction.

Generally speaking, this is good writing. There are a few punctuation problems and an extra word or two, but this format makes it too time consuming for me to do the edits for you. You got impatient toward the end (after the Austin-Healy Sprite) and need to go back and get it as clear, logical and readable as the first 80 percent. For example, when he emerges from the hospital and his life changes in a flash should be rewritten perhaps beginning with a "Then one day" and joining the two sentences with an "an". Then you need a space to be consistent with the rest of the presentation. The albatross sentences should be combined "neck, a hallucination...". I also think the two paragraphs reflecting our attitudes about the mentally ill should come at the end, after the paragraph noting the death. But those are just what I think---you should look at it again. With a bit of effort I think you'll have a very good, impactful piece of writing.
