Congratulations on your contest win with this, and it is certainly deserving of six stars and more. Young people should be inspired by this story. Love the sentence about when we cast out the heroes we threw out the best part of ourselves. Have we reached that point now where kids no longer dream of being heroes? Afraid so. Victims are becoming the heroes, and they know how to cash in. Very powerful, and wonderful observations. Excellent, hopeful ending to your story. Judi

"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!

On worlds afar or scenes at home,
wherever the cause should make me roam,
always I vow to fight the good fight--
to combat evil with Green Lantern's might!

In brightest light,
in darkest sea,
all dangers will be seen by me!
While others from these dangers flee,
I shall always a Green Lantern be!"

They are all various poetic narrations from DC Comics, "The Green Lantern", a super hero. And Jason found a ring -- a very special ring -- in the chest.

Excellent story, lancellot. What young boy doesn't enjoy having their grandfather tell them a tale or two. And, Jason's Grandfather told a whopper!

Congrats on winning this contest. I can certainly see why.

Thank you very much, Dean. Yes, the GL's of different sectors have different oaths. Alan Scott the original GL, had a slightly different one too, but I thought Hal's would be most familiar.

You've really run with this prompt to create a very inventive and original take on the idea. I love the combination of magical and realism (eg the lawyer suing the heroes out of job). The voice of the grandfather was a great device and your eager storyteller in the guise of grandson, sets up the narrative in a show, not tell, style. Your conclusion was agreat idea and really suited the tone of the narrative. All the best in the contest!

Sweet story and sad one too. I know what Grandfather felt, as I also mourn for the America that once was. Now, it seems everyone is ready to crucify the other. Or, is it just that we have access, thru the internet, to news of all the wrongdoing in the world?

Well written, interesting story.

I wish I had a six star to give you, just for the oath, baby! This is an awesome mix of comic book legend and the Watchmen, with a dash of the RPG brave new world. I love it! I thought I was the only one that wrote superhero stories on this site, but man I am so glad that someone else stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park. This story has amazing scene setting, perfect dialogue and great descriptions with a killer premise and theme. Excellent job!

I've never tried writing any kind of fiction stories. I am assuming he was a super hero but then I guess it's just a guess. God loves you and so do I.

"though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death....I will fear no evil....for Thou are with me" ...not sure of the meaning in the last line...but this is what came to mind. I loved your story....I believe it rests its head on truth. alright...love michael

I thought it was a very well written story. I remember as a child when the first GREEN LANTERN Comic came out. Those comic books were great! There were many super heroes and I loved them all. Best of luck.

Thank you very much. Do you mean Alan Scott? I was trying to model this after him. I was think of calling him grandpa Scott, but Hall Jordan was good too.

reply by victor 66 on 15-Mar-2014
Hal Jordan is very familiar. I might need a reminder about Alan Scott. Did I misconstrue about 'The Green Lantern'? And, you are very welcome.
reply by the author on 15-Mar-2014
No, you're right. Alan Scott was the Original Golden Age Green Lantern. He is still around in today's comics.
