Thanks, caromel. We are predatory by nature. Of course, we've certainly evolved, but into what? Unsociable, cell-phone texting, social media site surfing, uncaring...things? That's hardly evolution. Not in my book.

Fine rhyming quatrains, Dean. Corruption has risen to the top and flaunts itself proudly these days. Recognizable and bold, it no longer hides but seems to attract followers. Who'd figure?

Hey Dean,
I appreciated your insightful write on the corruption and weaknesses of man. Sometimes I agree with a thought put forth by Tolkien through Bilbo Baggins...our country could use a good invasion of dragons...you know, just to stir things up. Something needs to be done to quell this attitude of selfish desire and instant gratification that runs wild in this country...and hell, actually, the world! Dean, I like the message within this masterpiece. You can see the greed, hatred and those without feelings. Evil deeds done without remorse; no such thing as a tear.
I knew God existed at a very early age. Like most boys growing up, I experimented in my late teens. Then I changed and in May, 1970, I met the love of my life and my soul-mate. I knew going in that Beth had maybe 7 months to live. We were to be just friends, but we both fell in love. When she died the day after thanksgiving, I became very angry with God. After some time grieving, I realized she was my gift from Him and I knew then that He was my Savior. He showed me my path and I followed that path for over 40 years.
An exceptional piece of poetry. Your rhymes flow well; never forced. Well done my friend,,,,,,,,Jim

My dear Jim, I am really glad you liked this. What a pity you lost your love, your soul mate so early on, and I can understand why you would be angry at God, and most likely, everyone else. But He does always work for our good, albeit mysteriously, at times, and if we trust in Him completely, we can never go wrong. But, you already comprehend that.

This is a fine poem with excellent rhythm and rhyme. I found that helped greatly in getting to the the meaning behind the beast. It seems to be that the zeitgeist of 21 st century America is dominated by the lust and ammorality of people who seek to lead and control the way things are done: literally devouring good, with a will to despoil. I just saw 'Wolves of Wall Street' and since it's based on a real person, I'd say you wouldn't have to go much further than that to identify one beast of the times. America has for so long prided itself as moral arbiters of the world; kind of John Wayne riding the globe. With people 'corrupting moral values' in 'the land that the forefathers created' things aren't looking too good. You don't seem to happy with the politicians and lawmakers either who call for a religious moral crusade rather than staying with old values which made America into a great country. I think the beast just beneath the skin of each one of us, rises collectively at certain times in history (eg Germany wartime); probably times when people become complacent about what they value and lose sight of the people who fill the void of great leadership.

Reminds me of the black and white dog fighting inside you, an old indian tale.
A grandfather and his son were out fishing and the son asked why some people are bad (something along those lines) and the grandfather said, it's the white (good) and black (bad) dogs inside you fighting.

Yes, a beast. Some may say Satan. Others will say it is just our humanness - I guess it depends on our foundation - whether it comes from within or our within is subjected to this monstrous beast from some sort of trigger that is cocked and ready to fire when caressed by that lurking beast.
