Geoff,
hahahaha I'd probably feel the same way. I'm not a HUGE fish fan. I can eat some of it -depending on the type of fish and how it's prepared. I can be a pretty picky eater at times. haha
Thanks!

Thanks for picking this up, Robyn reward free, hehe. Mother-in-law's call that day(we call day after Christmas Day "Boxing Day" hangover from "Old Dart" hehe being "one of the colonies."

So I take it you hate the taste of fish? Well that is good since many are becoming extinct. So you are saving some fish from extinction in a small way. I never understand people serving fish for Christmas lunch makes no sense to me at all. Kind regards and best fishes (sorry, wishes) Meia xx

This is a very well written free verse poem you have penned. You used very good descriptive wording and very good imagery. I enjoyed it very much! Blessings, Teri

Thanks Sis the contest is long gone. I was stirred to put this up from Sasha in Mexico's recent post.

Thanks for this sentiment. My husband and I don't "celebrate" Christmas (I like to spell it Xmas with a cross for the genuine reason for the season). Likely it's because we didn't have children either. We haven't given gifts for years as a way of speaking out against the commercial nature of the holiday. And ask our friends to honor our request as well. And if they choose to give us something, I am not embarrassed to not have a gift for them in return.
Now we have friends and some family members who say, "You are doing a smart thing by not going nuts at Xmas."

AMEn friend. My wife's Mother I think I mentioned in the poem worships Christmas more than even we do as bible bashers ourselves. I think she thinks there is some kind of weird salvation or maybe browny points in worshipping Christmas. If, by any chance, you might be interested, I wrote a bunch of Christmas Carols about the real reason for Christmas in my "Really Truly Christmas Carols" book here on FS. But no worries if it offends you. I got mad at a Carols By Candlelight TV programme years ago where they sang all these songs that had NOTHING to do with what Christmas is supposed to be about. Thanks for being first cab off the rank this time around.

I used to drive a cab myself. Only by then we had radio dispatch... I ended up marrying the dispatcher.

I bet this placed in the contest. I always am amazed at your choice of words for your poetry. They are so different from what I write about and I am impressed every time. Keep up the good work even if it is just re-posting. I enjoy them. (Fell off my skateboard again so may be away short periods. Just pain...lol)

Sorry for your pain Sis. What are you doing on a Skate board? Are you younger than I thought hehe? Thanks for the great review. We are doing it alone from this year onwards for Christmas. Unless the pastor and his wife do something we might join in with that.

Well, Geoff, this is really quite good, and I wish you luck in the contest, but to be honest, it really isn't a free verse. It is a rhyming poem. Now, it is rendered as a,b,c,b, but the truncated lines show it should be an a,a, rhyming poem of couplets...
"Why should we bother 'bout Christmas Day?
Sometimes we would rather just stay away.
While others find their pleasure in grog,
I'd rather just go out and feed the dog."
I'm not picking on you, I'm just pointing out an observation. Oddly enough, this theme was the impetus to my last novel "Winter Solstice." The main characters are bored with another "Christmas" get-together, which they dislike because it takes them away from their routines.

A nice free verse on Christmas with the family. I hardly have a family to celebrate Christmas with anymore. Of course, when families are toxic, it's better to spend it alone, in my opinion.

Yep, mate. Gonna do it alone this year. Not toxic but along the same lines. Thanks for the great review.

You're welcome. We've been going alone for quite a while now.

Hi, I'm back. I hope. Anyway, You made me yearn for Christmas. A couple of years back, my husband got angry with his family who live about an hour and half from us. That year we decided to go camping for Christmas, just him and I and our puppies. It was great. Did it again last year. I know we are doing it this year because we now live in our RV in a camp ground, oh, excuse me an RV Resort. LOL. I lov ed your poem.

Thanks, new friend. Appreciated the lovely review. Yes, for years families always argued at Christmas time. Well I guess this is argument in reverse hehe. Cheers.

Hi Sankey. As much as we look forward to holidays, they can be disappointing. I think it's because we build them up so much in our mind that the real holiday can't measure up. I don't like to cook anymore, so the easier the better. I'd rather go out or keep it low key. An enjoyable write. Marilyn
