Nice article, John, regarding the decisions owners have to make during the off-season. $300 million ... How many players are worth that much at age 43?? Yikes. I believe every team needs a mixture of experienced and young players because they both inspire each other. The payroll for the Yankees must be astronomical as they had 6 out of 25 of the top earning players in MLB. You're right ... it's ludicrous. I enjoyed your article. Here's some things for you to look over.

the off season (off-season)
Fellow Yankee fans, lets (let's) be honest
baseballs (baseball's) top five players
baseballs (baseball's) "middle age"
Let's (Let's) take it one step further.... (... ) And (and)
based on the players (player's) body of work

Smiles,
Karyn : )

Thanks Karyn. I made the changes. I appreciate your reading this. As a baseball fan, I thought you'd enjoy it. For $300M the Yankees will let him walk, and I agree. That $30M per year can be well spent filling the many holes they have team wide.

First of all I wouldn't worry about free agency because the Yankees are the richest team in baseball with the biggest market. That's why the other teams year in and year out can't consistently compete. All the Yankees do is stack the deck with all their money to consistently acquire the best players, so I'm always against them!

But it has been proven that with all there spending, they have only won once in the past ten years...
Thanks Steve for reading and sharing your thoughts. Always appreciated. John

As a fan Boston fan, I take minor umbrage at your opening slur. But being that my team won it all, it's easy to be magnanimous.

$300 mil/ten years for a 32-year-old player doesn't makes any kind of sense. Even I can can appreciate the Yankees' loyalty to guys like Jeter and Rivera--and for the most part, they've done all right. But they took sizeable risks. Can they afford to take another? Three in a row? Tough to convert on that parlay.

Sooner or later, the Yankees are going to have to commit to a rebuilding. The recent template for success prohibits long term contracts, and embraces a fluid year-to-year line-up of a few proven impact players meshed with a cadre of veteran gamers, and talent up from the farm.

If the Yankees want to make Cano their big (re-) acquisition of the year, I can't blame them. But I can't help wondering what that same money could buy if it was spread around. This is a team with more than one hole, and a desire to hold to a $189 million budget.

Peace, Lee

Sorry for the slur, but you did have the last laugh. I agree that at the $300M price tag to me is a no-brainer, bye-bye Cano. They did make him an offer, 7yr/$180m +/-, and that's coming off a $50M contract.

As good as Cano is, he just doesn't scare me as did Pujols, and as does Big Pappi, Cabrera and the Jersey kid on the Angels, Trout.

We'll see what happens, to all teams.

I have to tell, John, I love the 'hot-stove' action in the off season, but I've given up on my local paper (The Hartford Courant). Do you know a good web site for keeping track of trades and signings? L

FYI: Pedroia signed a lesser deal during the season to stay with the Sox. Some guys still do that. Cano can afford to if he wants to.

Local papers rarely provide any in-depth analysis. I go right to the Yankee web site, then pull articles for around baseball from there. Also HotStove.com has a good summary and projections.
Jeter and Rivera - ?they've done alright? First ballot Hall of Famers... yes?
reply by humpwhistle on 20-Nov-2013
Thanks for the references. I'll try Hot Stove. As much as I love the Red Sox, I don't want to hear their spin.

Jeter and Rivera represent the 'class' of a generation. First ballot, easy. Rivera, best ever.

I love to hate the Yankees, but certain players transcend rivalries. I'll never be a Bucky Dent fan, but guys like Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Mattingly, Pettite(sp?), have earned my respect and admiration.
I like being in the midst of one of the greatest and prolonged sports rivalries ever.

first a few ticky-tacky things:

baseballs - needs an apostrophe - baseball's. The next sentence, beginning "The time" is dependent.

This list has two questions without a question mark

Fellow Yankee fans, let's, not lets

last paragraph" sb "have played for the Yankees their, not there.

comma after "career" Put a period after Cano and lose the word "until now"

lets sb let's

Now for the meat of the matter: I am a Pirates fans. . .Go Bucs!

Nice piece of writing. You care about the team. Have you published this somewhere you may get a response?

Thanks for sharing

I can read these damn things 1000x and still have these SPAG issues... Thank you for those corrections. I've gone through and made them.
As a Pirates fan, you finally have a team to cheer for. I was rooting for them, on the National League side.
I have no idea how to even remotely pursue publishing this or any other posting... any websites I can investigate?
Thank you for your time and encouragement P, I appreciate it very much. John

websites? whew. Too many and none I have found of any real help. If you live int he the city, you might nose around some of the local papers and see if they would publish you, probably without comp, but it is a way to start. . .good luck and keep writing. I know, the SPAG stuff never goes away

This is a well-witten and and interesting story with some difficult questions at the end. As a child, I watched your Yankees clobber my White sox so many times that I developed a life long case of heartburn. Great job!

This work has reached the exceptional level

If it is about the NYY, you get a six! Mariano is my favorite all time player, he is why you buy a ticket at a an outrageous price, on the CHANCE he will be brought in! This year without him will be a trial, no one comes close to his ability. The NYY have spent millions on ball players that turned out to be miserable, so taking a chance on a known quality player like Cano isn't a stretch. I'm also hoping for Granderson, they can dump A rod, not for the drugs, I really don't have an issue with that, he is just not that great in the clutch, and he is a flawed character. Either way, I'm waiting for spring!

Thank you Bina. Don Mattingly is my all time favorite Yankee. I've seen many of them over the years, but Donnie has it.
I don't think Cano will get to near the $300M, but I've been wrong plenty of times. I hope we sign him for the rest of his career as you do.
Yup, can't wait for spring training. John

This is a well-written, descriptive/persuasive essay that makes effective use of details and thoughtfully-posed questions.

Hi John,
This is a very well-written article and shows your vast knowledge of baseball. The astronomical cost a ball player earns is out of whack. To consider paying such a fee to an older player is insane. I like how you've ended this post, "have fun..."
