I don't know the American baseball scene, but I know sport. What you call the important season, the off season, certainly is a critical time for clubs of any description, let alone elite ones with big followings and expectations. I don't know how good that guy is, but the $300,000,000 is obscene and surely could be spread over a wider range of talent. I enjoyed your passionate writing and I hope your Yankees win the off season wrangling and leads to success.

Thank you very much mfowler. One doesn't necessarily need to know the sport to get a jist of one players demand of $300M. That's an absurd amount of dough. Agreed, that sum cam be spent wisely filling gaps in the team and building for the future in the minor leagues.
    Thank you for reading... John

Knowing nothing about these players, except having heard their names for years, I am not any help in answering your question. For anyone to be guaranteed that kind of contract at this late an age sounds crazy to me.

Well written and well thought out.

Very astute observation, and 100% correct, in my opinion. Thank you for reading this post and sharing your thoughts.

Not to worry. I get behind at times as well. Thank you for reading and sharing. You are correct in summing it by saying "loads of money changes hand in a short career". When is enough, enough?

So, I live on the other coast with the joke team of the Seattle Mariners. I've been yelling at the management since they trusted Gay-Rod and didn't trade him before he was a free-agent. They don't listen to me :(.
I don't follow baseball, much. But as to the questions - another thing to consider is personality of the player to personality of the team/city. Dennis Rodman could never play basketball in Seattle and have a following. The players need to inspire the fans to come to the game, and spend their money.
The piece does inspire debate.

You do have one of the best pitchers in baseball in King Felix, a player the Yankees covet but will never get.
You make a good point about the personality, but for most players its probably not an issue. Dennis Rodman was a very, very, very unique individual. Thanks for the review, always appreciated. John

John, I found no problems with the writing, other than it bored me silly. But that is NOT your fault. I'm just not at all interested in baseball, so don't take that as a criticism. I'm sure many readers are interested and will be happy to discuss players with you. (Guys and their sports... hehe)

Hi John,
I'm not up on my baseball the way I am with your American football, but I do the gist when talking on rosters... 300 hundred million, until Mr Cano is 42... that's more money than any one player should have their whole sporting career, especially when it's only speculation to whether he can last that long, and at that level.

Now in saying that, if the individual has looked after himself and doesn't carry an injury, he may have another four years or so in him.

For me, 32 years of age is the optimal age... both strength and mental ability is at it's prime... but of course there are some freaks that last much longer.

So I hope for sake and all the other Yankee supporters is they blend the young with the experience they have... I know I don't have much weight on the subject of your favorite game, but I did enjoy the passion with which you wrote this piece... a true fan, and obviously someone that truly cares... but 300 million... what's that about?

Have a good off season, hope you receive some good news as it progresses into off season purchasing and selection time.

Kindest thoughts,
James

Thank you James for your astute observations. Agreed, $300M is way out of line for any one player. He would basically hold the team hostage by himself without much budgetary funds to employ other respectable players. Some team out there will break the bank and offer him something along those numbers. Happens every year.
We'll see, thank you for reading. Always appreciated. John

I remember when.... I was thirty-two....now that was thirty-five years ago.. Uh oh, now how would I consider the body of work.... Oh I just remembered, you said 'for any Yankee fan reading this,'...excuse me, I will bow out of this one. LOL HOWEVER, when the Yankees get to the series, if the Cards are not in, the Yankees will be MY team.... Great write John, love, Carolyn

i agree about the outrageous salaries..i think back to the baseball strike yrs ago were many players were whining on how much money lost, not realizing those lack of games caused issues to many businesses around the stadium. oh of course the fans who pay thier salary..watching the bs on a-rod drug hearing is so discouraging...but i still love the game and always can count on some form of entertainment from the yankees...i wanted to thank u for selecting my work! its an honor to be included with urs..great job and thanks again!..mkflood

injury-riddled season - add the hyphen
I am a life long Phillies fan, but that doesn't mean I know a whole lot about the game, especially the behind-the-scenes stuff, so I found your explanations of what goes on with off-season decisions fascinating. You explain things clearly and argue your position with conviction :-) Brooke

I went to quite a few Phillies games when I worked for Spencer Gifts. They had season tickets and I was able to get them two, maybe three times per season.
    Thank you for reading... John

Spencer Gifts - what memories that brings back. My kids and I never shopped at the King of Prussia Plaza without spending time there :-)

Growing up in Northern California and having grown up in a house where my dad and brother were big time San Francisco Giants fans, I can't really comment too much on the Yankees. But I did find your essay/story interesting. I sure do agree with you that paying any player $300 million is ridiculous. Who needs that much money anyway? Thanks for sharing this, John.

Thank you Connie for reading and sharing with me. Agreed, $300M is one boat load of money. There will be a team out there that will come close to that I'm sure... John
