Now this is an exceptionally written article. It has a bit of history in its thoughts, as well as being in tune with what is going on in the present. This also has some subtitle humor , as well as some outright humorous content as well. I really loved the commentary about the Aryan brotherhood. I don't know why I just called it a brotherhood. It would be more like they are all misunderstood in their own belief structures. This was a great article that I really enjoyed reading and writing this review for... John

I found this to be an interesting read I must confess I didn't understand half of what people my age were saying not 2013 I understand it least.
I loved when people talked face to face in an language everyone could understand.

I know, while technology has given us a faster and more efficient way of communicating, it has also lessened our ability to have good old fashion conversations with one another.

When it comes to the texting lingo, you don't know the half of it. There are so many students nowadays who really CANNOT see the difference between writing normal sentences with actual words vs. using text abbreviations. I remember one student who did not know that "because" had seven characters instead of three (b/c).
As we get more tech savvy, we actually seem to be getting dumber. LOL

I think your last remarks sum up the tech savvy situation very well. What we are gaining in the technical sense is being offset by the loss of language skills and writing skills. We can only hope that ultimately both will be able to coexist in this new virtual world Man has created.

Haha, good one. This is so true and I think it is just going to get worse, as you also indicated. I am amazed when I go to a restaurant to see how many people are on their phones. They can be with their kids, friends or whoever and if that person doesn't have a phone or game, they just sit while the other chats away. Talk about rude! I saw it today and yesterday, as I was out getting my taxes done. Your essay really laid it on the line, in an interesting way. I enjoyed the quotes, too. Well done.

It seems the downside to this technology is a certain amount of disconnect between people, at least on a physical level. As one quote in my piece said ... "absolute communication, absolute isolation."
Actually, this piece came to me when I was sitting in a restaurant and observing small groups of people sitting together and all were lost in their iPhones. Like you, I see this all the time.
I so appreciate your feedback on this and sharing your thoughts and examples with me.

I have to say all of the shorthand language that has sprung up along with this technology baffles me more than a bit. It is part of the computer age lexicon, I guess, but I do not seem to adapt to it so well.
I do hope writing as we have experienced it in our lifetime will not fall by the wayside in the future.

Its okay, due to my grandsons insisting on texting me and using the standard shorthand, I have, through sheer exposure, picked up on a lot of it. I do quite a bit of texting, but it is more like letter writing and I am sure my kids and grandkids just shake their heads when they see a text from me.

Well said, Marisa. But this generation will think it's normal, and just the older gen will agree with you. Things do change, some for better and some for worse so it all balances in the end. I have never texted in my life. I purposely got a phone that ONLY makes phone calls and use it only for emergencies or to call home. I'm too old to learn all the new tricks that, as you say, are always changing and growig anyway.

Well, Phyllis, even though I do find all of this technology daunting at times, I do have an iPhone and unlimited texting. Having a teenage grandson who only likes to text,I have learned a lot of the text shorthand, but I am stubborn and will not use it when I text. So my texts are more like letter.

How many times have I gone out to dinner with family and, as you noted, everone has their cellphone or ipod out. If they do converse, it's to show you something "cute" on their handhelds. I have been known to ask everyone to please put them away, but they don't like it a bit. It's all around us, like a plague. I recently wrote an essay on a family Easter gathering, which was wonderful because no one took out their cells until the very end of the evening. This is one of the best writes, no holds barred, I have read in some time. In my heart I am giving the 6 stars....perfect.

It does seem to be the plague of the 21st Century.
I can remember dining out when my oldest grandson was little. If he got fidgety before his food came, we would play with him to entertain him. With my youngest grandson, his mother gives him an iPad to keep him occupied while waiting for his food. There is such a disconnect these day when it comes to actual hands on communication, even with our children.
I so appreciate your review and comments on this piece. Not to worry about the six star rating, I much prefer your feedback.
