Great post. I could see every move in my mind - demonstrating the fine art of radio broadcasting.
Couple of nits:
as one of baseball[']s oldest cliche states
[Some suggest inanimate things can't "possess, so on that thought perhaps: as one of the oldest cliches in baseball states...]
But, this is baseball and the words [']supposed to[']

I'm a Yankee fan and have been since the late 50's. Today I pitch Slo-pitch. As to your article it sounds like Bob Uecker on the mike. Very well detailed, very knowledgeable and milks the tension to the very last second. Well written, well paced and with many asides...informative. Excellent and worthy.

I'm pretty sure Sterling would know exactly how many game-winning hits has against the Yankees. These are the kinds of stats these guys thrive on.
Are you sure you're using 'antithesis' correctly? Or are you mocking the announcer's penchant for misusing words?

Well, even your BoSox have gotten to Mo, especially 2004!
I believed I used antithesis correctly... antithesis to his opponent coming to bat at the most in-opportune time.
Beloved as in the fans...
For now, I think the rivalry will take a step back as have both franchises.

An other fun baseball read, JohnnyD. I loved the story told through the radio dialogue of the Yankee announcers and the action was tense and exciting. No SPAG seen. Great story but it sure makes me wish the season would start soon.

I'm not very good with judging baseball commentary. I don't understand the vernacular, but it sounded very good to me--just like old fashioned radio used to be. Those were classic announcers!

Wow, sounds like a great game. My brother was just here from CA to FL to see the spring training games. He got real sick and missed the first one Braves and Nats, great game. The second was Braves and Tigers, not so great, Tigers brought their C roster so no comp for the Braves. We had a great time with everyone's last name. Almost none had an everyday last name. I don't know how they fit on their uni's. We had fun. This is very well written, I felt like I was there.

I could do one of two things to catch a game this year. The first would be to go to Atlanta. I love Atlanta and it would be a perfect reason to go. The second would be to go to Florida and watch them play the Devil Rays and here's something I just realized; Holy crap!, I have to be in Washington DC for Emily's Marching Band and on the 5th, they're playing Baltimore. That feels like Karma! I'll buy you peanuts, cracker jacks and whatever else you want because that can;t be to far for you either is it? Maybe we could meet up there and get you so more writing inspiration!

At the age of nine, someone asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up.....the announcer for the New York Yankees was his answer. Not the ball player, the announcer.......and he grew up and did it! He is great, if you ever get a chance to see him. Thanks for bringing the Yankees to life in this story, with my favorite player, Mariano! Let the season begin!

Bina, see Micheal Kay? I watch almost evry game televised. He's very good and knowledgable. I even catch his radio sports talk show periodically.

Yes I do! Two actually. Aiden my 20 month old granddaughter (profile photo) and her two month old brother Ryder. They are adorable if I must say so myself. Thank you Evelyn for reading and the generous review. John
