You have given a lot of very important and interesting information in your essay. I submitted several essays hoping I could get them put into book form - all personal memoirs to Tate Publishing Co. I immediately received an offer of a contract from them. I didn't think it was possible to get an offer so quicky so I decided it must be a scam and didn't sign their contract. I had chosen them because of an article in the paper about someone in a nearby state who had her children's book published by them. I couldn't get in touch with her.

This is a very enlightening and empowering report. I am dealing with the people around me classifying self-publishing as some sort of 'vanity novel'. I try to explain, that to my knowledge, this is the way it is done now.

Thanks, Bill! You're right. Even John Grisham self-published "A time to Kill," before writing "The Firm." There are other authors who self-published before being offered a contract by major publishers. Good luck if you plan to publish. Dossie

I liked your clever title and your reminder to do careful editing--I never cease to be surprised at the number of typos mainstream publishers include in final work. An interesting overview. You do know that Avon Romance will only accept manuscripts submitted by an agent, right?

I've purchased trade paperbacks published through Create Space. They are of excellent physical quality. Content quality, of course, varies by author.

Thanks, Nancy! I believe there are publishing guidelines in the essay for publishing with Avon, I'll have to check. Phyllis, has published with CreateSpace and has very good things to say about it. Thanks so much for this great review.
