Hehe, very cute. Fruitcake gets a bum rap--I like it, personally. You captured a little kid's voice perfectly--7 or 8?--and I could definitely see the whole scene through his eyes. I have no suggestions for improvement. Best wishes in the contest.

Wow, lots of memories for me in this piece. I totally forgot about Tiddly Winks and the Roy Rogers pistols. Your description of Christmas in 1948 hit the mark. And then there is the infamous fruit cake. You framed that in the proper light too. Well done. -Judy

Diferent part of the world, maybe, but I could relate to every little bit of that! Except: living on a farm, my older sister had been encouraged to breed some turkeys to take to market for pocket money. She sat there and cried...NO WAY was she going to eat turkey. Then dad told her it was the one which had always attacked her... so she thoroughly enjoyed it after that! Thankyou for a lovely tale. Pat.

Are you really a medium, Pat? Thanks so much fro your wonderful review...I do appreciate it very much. Bob

Yes, I really am a working medium... but I fill a hole you never see on the tv... I am a member of a group which has become increasingly disillusioned by the way we see others working: charge every penny the market will bear. We work with folk who need closure and have no money to spare. Better that way. Pat.

Gladly... after the christmas recess!... However, if it's urgent, then I'll 'ask up'... not tonight, though... I've had a glass of wine... sorry! Pat.

What a great story! You created the perfect visual of how holidays were spent when I was a child. I loved having holidays at my grandmas house with all my cousins and it brought back many good memories for me. Your description as that from the child's pov was excellent. I immediately became that young boy through your well chosen words. Best of luck in the contest. You set the bar for this one.
Kindly, Judy

This sounds as if it's actually in a kid's head. The thought, the words, the viewpoint are spot on. It's not astory ABOUT a kid's perspective, it's a story FROM a kid's perspective. Um, and it's funny. Great entry for the contest, and good luck! --Curt

I am from a large family. The "old" folks eat first, followed by the "younger" folks, followed by us kids. This is very well weritten. Good luck in your contest.

oh yes...that fruitcake...So many jokes of what it can be used for and how to pass it on to others..I am sure through the eyes of a child the fruit cake would appear to be the enemy...

Fruit cake through the eye of a child - what a fun viewpoint. I was captured at the beginning with the child's thoughts about the brat Eric. I can relate to that because there always seemed to be some bratty boy who got away with everyting at our friend and family gatherings. I haven't thought about those memories in years. I love the way the little boy stuffs himself and the ending when the well meaning aunt pushes the fruit cake at the suffering child. This tale was a good way to start my morning. Nice little story.
