Thank you for writing about a broken heart. There are many times when this kind of heartbreak can happen. If there are children in a marriage, it is always just a little bit worse.

There is a lot of wisdom in these observations, Beth. I know from personal experience, and the kind that one witnesses second hand, that you are right. These things that happen are not ours to fix. We have to simply be present and do no harm. This too shall pass.

This is the land of heartache exactly - a place most of us, get to visit or maybe have to visit during a lifetime journey. Not exactly a nice place though strewn with the detritus of heartbreak. Not a pretty sight! The humorous touch helps the medicine go down though!

You have given some very good advice in this article, especially for mothers of teenagers. I like the way you ended: "If there is any message you can convey to them at this time of personal tragedy, none is any better than the little four-word cliche that my grandma used to utter, "This too shall pass."

Thank you Anne, I appreciate the review and comments. It all boils down to just being there for them to listen if they need to talk. Healing will eventually happen.

You are welcome. That is true, just be there to listen.

This humerous piece of non-fiction provides a detailed look at the trials and tribulations a mother experiences as her children grow to adulthood and suffer the wounds of a broken heat. The message that healing must come from within and that if counseling is involve, the heartbreak is a direct consequence of a traumatic childhoid- its mom's fault- resonates well, and adds humour to your account. Thanks so much for sharing.

I really love your writing. It has a lot of wisdom in here. Yes, broken hearts do mend over time, but always placing blame is another matter. We all suffer through it.
I think I took my son's divorce a lot harder than he did. That's when mom's shoulders get bent out of shape.
All you say here is so, so true. Loved all of it.
My best,
Marie

Dear Beth, this whole post is filled with some of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard.
The best part of this particular essay is your vivid description of how people process a broken heart.

I am laughing over your comparison of heart break to chicken pox. It is actually a good comparison. I imagine being a parent is a challenge watching your children go through heart break over relationships but like chicken pox, one gets through it. I enjoyed reading your humorous look at your children.

I've always said, you can't walk in someone else's pain, I broke a few hearts myself, and probably a little callously too, but the first love of my life broke my heart not once, but twice. It coincided with my best friend committing suicide, it lasted 18 long months, I lost weight, I wasn't overweight anyway, so my jeans started falling off me, I contemplated suicide, not seriously, but did think about it. I decided one day to stop being depressed, and I did, but it was the worst thing I've been, but I met Elaine shortly after the second heartbreak, I recovered quickly. Beautifully written Beth. My girls married their first and only love. They are both still in love.

Love is complicated and you can't really fix another's broken heart but you have to show compassion an listen as they work through it.
It seems like you have an extreme case of male version of heartbreak complicated with the tragic death of your friend. You survived and God had something better waiting for you. I appreciate the review and six stars.

Smiles to what you wrote--

You're one of the lucky ones and I was too. I met Evan at sixteen and got married at eighteen and we celebrated 61 year before he died. My kids weren't so lucky. Thanks so much for the review and the six stars.
