alvin, you are so right and it is important that we understand that this is a workshop site. you've given me many a three star review over the past two years, educating me, for no pay. your time, your knowledge, your ability to comprehend the greater cause and stay focused on what we are here to do is hard to beat. in my view, you are one of the stellar members here. you rise above and beyond the call.

your grateful friend,
penny

You do flatter me. I like to help people, as long as they want to improve their writing, and I have learned much from people here. Thank you for your kind words.

i don't want to flatter you. i want to encourage you. put wind beneath your magnificent wings, just as you've done for me. all things should come full circle and fanstory gives us an unlikely opportunity to do exactly that. you are a fine role model and friend. you are objective, polite, technical and RESPECTED. you go you!

I will give the five. No spag. What you said needed to be said by someone. Since I read a lot of writers more skilled than I, I do give a lot of five. But I do give suggestions on improvement and will give a four and the promise of a reread if the person let's me know. I have read work where t3he is not correct and as courteously as I have tried to help or inform the writer no change is made. I take into consideration the country the writer is from, is English a second language. I have received many fours for my prose, but in the process was given help to improve the work to a higher standard. I think too many reviewers worry about not getting reviewed if they don't give all a five. It is every writer's choice to edit or not. But to blanketly give everyone a five leads me to believe they are not reading for the joy and learning involved but the money to promote their work. Having said my piece. Great write. Kudos for saying something that needs to be said. I also believe that giving someone a four because they don't like the artwork or the author doesn't use capitalization on her name is uncalled for. joan marie

I agree with everything you state. Thank you for being my supporter. I truly appreciate it.

I think you spoke the truth. The rating system is good, people just don't use it correctly. I got a four for leaving out one comma. Wouldn't check for correction. I have to laugh at some of these people, but after a while I get frustrated with the lunacy of it all. I have had people give me bad reviews and I just blow them off. What I don't appreciated is someone who takes the time to give me corrections and then tells me they don't have the time to rerate. jm

Thank you for writing this piece. I, too, have been lulled into giving almost every one a 5 because it seems to be the norm and what is expected. When I really want to give a lower score, I am somewhat intimidated.

You voiced the problem with this attitude very well and I, for one, am going to be braver in the future and give the score I really feel a piece has earned. Thank you for giving me the backbone to do that.

By the way, I am giving you the 6 because I feel you deserve it. Your story is written with perfect grammar and punctuation, your thoughts clearly and eloquently stated.

You are very kind. I feel I have to post an article like this every month. However, what choice do I have? Sometimes people don't hear you unless you are "screaming."

I do think many more people are becoming braver. I know the Spanish site (I occasionally write in Spanish) is much, much tougher. Thanks for a great review.

Alvin, this is so true. It's easy to give someone a five so you don't have to incur their wrath. The part that's unfair is when they give you a three or four just because they don't like your story or poem. One story I wrote got over thirty "raves" and a bunch of sixes saying, "original, amazing, great with no spags, and so on", and one person gave me a three, saying only that it wasn't original. If I don't like the subject of the story or poem, (filth, or some ABSURD fantasy) I just click out of it. Maybe I shouldn't, but I won't read trash. I notice that most people like the sex or violence. These seem to be the ones that win the contests. Thanks for reading my 'spout off'. patwannabe

Yes, I agree. I am trying to reintroduce aesthetics into English literature, but people want sex and violence (although I live in Los Angeles, I blame films like "Batman" for it--people were taking six year old kids to see it!) There are works I skip as well. Thanks for a great review.

Hi Alvin. You are so right. When I first joined this site all I knew about poetry was that it had rhymes lol. I had not heard of haiku, rictameters, quatrains etc etc. I have learned so much since joining and I still have a vast amount to learn. If I receive a 3 or 4 star review I do appreciate it if the reviewer offers advice on how I can improve it as I always try to do that. Thanks for writing this and reminding us of the true purpose of this site

Your review made my morning. It's been a tough one (I started at 0300 hours this morning), and this made it all worthwhile. Thank you so much.

Doing better. My health still isn't that good, but I won't die anytime soon. The ongoing battle with the racist police here is wearing me down, but what else can I do but fight? Thanks for asking.
