Hi Barbara, you certainly did
the right thing looking out for
Andrew. Great storytelling.
My daughter was both a
cheerleader and soccer player. She might have some
arthritis in her hip, she turned
43 last November. I love
reading your family stories.
Have a good start to your
week. Blessings ~

I salute you for being firm and taking the necessary action .Too much of pain killers can have terrible side effects . I am sure Andrew would never forget this and would always be your best friend..

You note that this was 2003. It was even worse in the last half of the last century. Team doctors worked for the coach. They had no authority. Bucking the coach would cost them their coveted positions. They were also, more often than not, sports enthusiasts, veterans of the game, and forever fans. Winning seasons and championships dominated.
In the military, we were trained: first the mission, then the men. But in high school (and even college), these are kids in a sport making powerful people lots of money. It should not be mission over men mentality.
Thank you for highlighting the issue.

Thank you for sharing this story about your son's knee injury. I admire his fortitude! But as a mom, I totally agree with your decision. Glad you and your son have such a great relationship and can smile together over this memory.

You were right ti interfere, I am in a similar situation I injured my right knee in a zumba class did lots of physiotherapy, but the pain is still there. I finally did an ultrasound tomorrow I'm seeing my doc. I hope to have a solution for this pain. Like Andrew I can't give up... dancing. So I've become a collector of knee braces.

Hello, Barbara, I'm a mom and I understand why you had to get involved with your son's football games. I would have done the same. Thank God you did, Andrew could have had worse injuries and a possible addition to pain killers. All are serious health issues. Deep inside Andrew should know you were looking out for his best interest.
Well written and easy to follow.

Hello Barbara,
one has to wonder how many other boys were given the OK to play by that bonehead, which could result in permanent damage to their bodies. I understand the desire to want to do something so badly, but we've only got the one body, and it has to last our entire lives. Of course, try telling that to a teen. Well done gal.
Have a blessed day.

I coached basketball and cross-country for a number of years when I was teaching. I never liked to see kids playing football. Too many times I would witness injuries that followed these kids for the rest of their lives.

True, but these boys love football. Thank you for the understanding and the support.

I'm sorry Andrew had a sports career ending injury. I had a torn ACL and MCL, and two sons had torn ACLs. Technology has advanced so much since mine and Andrews that players can come back almost good as new. Both of my sons were able to play a year later. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the understanding and support. I'm glad to hear that sports medicine is advancing, because as long as there are boys accidents will happen. LOL

The only error I noted was that you could've doubled the wordage and I would've been fine with it. Thanks for continuing to share these family adventures. Too many doctors have doled out pin medicine in the past, including in my life. Now I try not to take any, unless I am in extreme pain.
