Thos is a heartbreaking story. I grew up in an abusive home also. My dad didn't hit my mom, but emotionally abused her.
Your story is well written and descriptive. It's sad when the church doesn't help her.

The church turned a blind eye. We are survivors, my friend.

Oyyyy!!

This is horrible, but it's so well-written, I could NOT stop reading. This is my first chapter reading this intriguing book, but now I'm thinking I'm going to have to begin at chapter one and catch up.

It's beyond outrageous what the Powers That Be in your church said and didn't do. I'm so sorry that you and your mom had to endure such tumult. So many writers had atrocious childhoods, it seems, doesn't it? Thank you for using your talent with words to liberate those horrors from the dark. We can learn so much because you're willing to be generous. xoxo

Nowadays this stuff is harder to hide, but not impossible.
My heart hurts for you and the child you were then. But, I am afraid a lot of men still feel entitled to treat women and children as they see fit. Keep writing. make people see different. Good strong story. If he was alive, and if I had money I would come over there and hit him with my cast iron skillet. Love ya honeybunch. Karen

Thanks! He needed a skillet up side the head.

I read that 50% of domestic violence is still not reported. Sad.

As I lived through it myself, we become trapped in the closet of shame. How they make us feel as if we are the bad ones, is Beyond me. Love to you and yours. karen

Back in the days of our youth there were as many abusers as there wasn't. maybe more. My dad was rather bad at times, but never if he stayed away from the juke-joints. And mothers and wives rarely left. Amazing to me is the lack of support from the preacher set. Maybe they too had demons to control.

How horrific for you all. It was just as well Danny stole Dean Paul's car so that the church could wake up and stop keeping their heads in the sand, and see what he was really like. Such brutality should never be justified or overlooked by true believers. Very well written.

It was an odd stance for the church to take. Appreciate you!

I must give you a six for all the pain and struggles you and your family endured. Not being able to find help even with the church is heartbreaking. I can't stop the tears or the heartbreak.

While many people can do evil things but still have some redeeming qualities, this step-father, it seems, lacked any human qualities and could only ever be described as a monster! And as for the Church's pathetic intervention, the least said about that the better. Women really were (and still are in some quarters) considered to be chattel, to grin and bear it. At least, as you saw the signs you continued to plot your escapes. Survival instincts can always be our best friend in the end when no adult is prepared to intervene (disgraceful!) Well done, Doug, for surviving so remarkably well! Debbie

Sadly this happened and still happens in too many households. I have a friend who went to legal aid in the late 1970's and h the male lawyer told her "you have 2 sons you can't afford to leave. Go home and put up with it" unbelievable but true. Sorry to read you and your mother have a similar story Douglas.
Cheers
Valda

Nicely written.
Unfortunately, too many perpetuate the criminal behavior - "Now, it's my turn." "This is how you parent." "I was beaten and lived, you will too. It'll make you tough."
My bet, is that the 'board' will have a tough time on judgment day.
Best wishes.
