If I was to guess this author is in their seventies or later, as who else could write in a Western genre. The only faux pas might have been "flicked on" the light as gas lanterns were the lighting of the day.

Not quite that old, but I did watch lots of John Wayne Westerns when I was a kid, along with The Lone Ranger, & The Cisco kid - all inspirations to this day!

What a delightful write. I see this as a story for boys approaching their teens. A Roy Rogers type of Western. It flows smoothly, and I sense the lookout out guy may well be on his first ride with a posse. He sees what his imagination tells him. A neat write. But I'm on the side of the baddies, I hope they manage a getaway. Really well-written.

I really enjoyed the way you started this with Colt sneaking up over the ridge. I could almost feel the sun's glare myself! The change to Ben's domestic scene was an unexpected change of pace, and I loved the way his conversation with his mom lightened things up. The flicker of movement at the end adds just the right amount of mystery to leave me wanting more. Great job!
