I can see you as an independent little cuss growing up, and being from the south, I hope you've heard the term and know what I'm saying. LOL. I can't seem to find a definition for cuss anywhere, but having heard it my whole life, I'm using it. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Ric. Yes I heard the tern cuss. I always thought when it was referring to kid maybe in meant. I had an uncle they used to call me an aggravating little cuss because If I saw him trying to take a nap I would make it impossible for him to sleep. Thank you for the six stars.

Beth,
Helllo,
Your poignant story is painful to read because I have some memories at school I would rather forget too. My mom sewed our Sunday dresses and she did such a good job of it. We wore uniforms in Catholic Andrade school, so I was in equal footing with the rich kids. (About the only thing good about grade school).
I'm sorry about your teacher. Teachers are supposed to be supportive and foster a creative teaching environment.
Excellent story, Beth.
Best wishes,
Cindy

Ooooh, my heart hurts for this girl..."I guess if you don't act like you're embarrassed, people may assume you might know something they haven't discovered yet."
I am embarrassed for that woman too -- a teacher, no less.
Wonderful writing!!!!!

Oh, hand-me-down clothes... so many of us grew up in them!! Oh, the stories..!! :/ :/ I was in seventh heaven the times mom would take us to buy a new dress or jeans! ;) And, yeah, sounds like that teacher was quite the self-absorbed one... oy. Another well-written collection of accounts that makes our Beth who she is today!! ;) Thanx for sharing and keep 'em coming! ;) Yvette

That is amazing, Beth, you tell this so very well and you also show how it was to grow up back then in your part of the world. I was born in 1952 into an orphanage.
Your story fascinates me. Ullaxcx

And I agree with you I never had much of a fashion technique my mother sewed my clothes for me to watch you clothes ahead. I barely had enough clothes to change it to a different outfit each day of the week after that I had to wear the same clothes over and over a week after week. I now in my closet have more clothes than I've ever really had in my life. Sometimes I almost have too much in the way of clothes now. Patricia.

WOW! How horrible of Mrs. Turnage! She turned out not to be as nice as originally thought. I've known some teachers who were only interested in students who could make them look good. It's not the way teachers should act. Again, I enjoyed reading.

Did she really use pencils to curl your hair? One, or many? We used frozen OJ and lemonade cans that had been washed and their ends cut off for big waves instead of curls.
I am shocked that a teacher and adult would do something so vindictive to a young person. I think I would have never gone to her again for anything!
That's quite a story, Beth. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thank you, Pam. I had very straight hair. Mom made a head full of tight little curls on a number3 pencil with hair and I kept them in over night. The next morning you could get a brush through them they were so tight. It was horrible and I would throw a fit. I took lesson from her again in 11th and 12th and I was her golden girl. She let me have the leads in the Jr. and Sr plays. It wasn't fair to others who tried out for those parts. Some teachers are like that.

I think sometimes, no matter how much our parents love us, sometimes they just don't get us, I could feel that when you were talking about the clothes you bought. A well written piece, Beth. I really enjoyed reading it.
