Good essay. The metaphor of a pacifier is a very fitting one. This internet addiction thing is a huge issue. It seems children need stimulation, but they often abuse it to enslave themselves in addictions. Hope they get it all sorted out.

Boy, do I ever agree with you! And I, being a old grandmother, pretty much blame the parents who should put their foot (feet :) down. I didn't have that problem when my daughter was a teen -- shows you how old I am--but I think kids should have rules with cell phones and also, a lesson in manners and respect. I know. Easy for me to say.
When you were a teacher, what did the parents think about their kids' bad grades? Did they ever come to you with concern?
When I see a bunch of kids sitting together on their phones instead of talking to one another, it is very discouraging. No wonder now there's all this AI stuff which really has me worried.
anyway, didn't mean to be so long winded, just wanted to applaud You!
