Hi DonandVicki,
Wonderful poem with a most delightful last line! Inspired writing that took the reader on the boat ride to the most dreadful place of all, but the all encompassing power of
God transcends to all parts of the known world. The River Styx included... and down to the Underworld itself.
Congratulations on your win, well deserved for such inspired writing!
Stay well,
Senyai

This is a good poem. It is thoughtful and concise. It is definitely worthy of the prize it won for its use of language. Also the ending is fantastic.
Little fixes or suggestions on fixes in punctuation, in case other reviewers did not point them out:
Yet in his latter days
he found a narrower way,
he thought it best taken
before it became too late.
I suggest using a semi-colon instead of a comma after the word way; you have two independent clauses here.
At long last he finally arrived
at a destination we all will find,
the ominous river Styx.
where he met a boatman there.
I suggest replacing the period after Styx with a comma.
Boarding the skiff
the boatman asked:
"Are you afraid of what's
on the other side?"
I suggest inserting a comma after the word skiff.
"Why should I be afraid?"
The weary traveler asked,
I would un-capitalize The and put a period after asked.

Hello, DonandVicki!
Congratulations on your exceptional free verse poetic offering.
As a former teacher of mythology, I surely enjoyed your referencing the "River Styx," and your ending was sublime.
Thank you for sharing!
And Welcome Back!

A beautiful ending and a glance at the other side. Congratulations on your win. I could almost feel the cold mist and see the boatman as he rowed across the river Styx. gayla

I don't know much about or read a lot of poetry, but sometimes, I run across one that just sort of speaks to me and are a real pleasure to read. Thanks for for sharing and congratulations on your big blue ribbon! And it's also nice to see names I haven't seen in a while, and who I've always enjoyed reading.

Awesome! Yes, in the end when our time comes, either we have accepted the word of the Lord or we haven't, but if we have, there will be no fear. Well written. Thank you for sharing.

This reminds me of a sermon I once heard delivered by Aretha Franklin's father. It involves a train caught up in a dangerous storm. The passengers were in fear of being injured or possibly even losing their lives. A little girl was on the floor playing, a passenger said why are you not afraid? The little girl said, "My father is driving this train and he knows I am on board. So I am not afraid." Now, I ask you, is that not inspiring?

Truly inspiring Nomi. Worthy of a short story or poem in it's self.
