I particularly liked this chapter, knowing how many of the world's great discoveries have been accidental. It takes a divergent mind to see the link and take advantage of it, as Brian has done. Another strong chapter. You're on a roll.

This one was a bit of a challenge, because first, I had to figure out just how he was going to fix the problem with his drug. I figured it was in the genes why some people don't experience euphoria with opioids, so I then figured that the solution would require modifying the genes to prevent the binding to the opioid receptors which caused the euphoria. I'm pretty proud of myself for having reasoned that out myself.
I don't exactly know how I came up with the idea to have a kitten climbing a screen to be the spark to give him an idea, but it worked out well to give us a visual of how that binding may be eliminated.

Great Chapter. There are many aspects to this story that I like. From the wife that is standing by her husband throughout his recovery. This as well as her interest in his success shows how much she loves him. They bounce off each other. I like the addition of Nadia in this Chapter. I'm particularly fond of the scientific detail. I have a science background in both genetics and chemistry. So this aspect of the story is especially interesting to me. And of course the mental illness. I can certainly relate to that. Fantastic story.

Thanks very much for this wonderful review, Amelie. I'm not a scientist, but this is mainly what interested me in writing the story at the beginning. I wanted to do the science justice, so I did a fair amount of research to try to make the story plausible, yet understandable at the same time.
Having been through anxiety and depression myself a number of times earlier in my life, I can relate to that part too. As well as having a Julia in my life.
-
Wow, I'm amazed that you are not a scientist in real life. I'm blown away. Your knowledge is outstanding. Some job you've done!
-
I'm a retired IT systems analyst who loves to analyze things, so I got to really think about and try to figure out the science and explain it in an understandable fashion.
I don't really know how feasible my solution is, but at least it sounds semi-convincing. In an Afterword, I ask real neuroscientists to be gentle on me and not laugh too hard!
Thanks very much for your kind remarks, Amelie.

Good chapter. The mental health or illness and treatment aspect will appeal to many here on FanStory, that group is almost as large as the religious wing. The cat is also a nice addition for the many pet owners. And good for adding more reasoning behind Jules, the wives will love that.

Thanks, I guess. If it appeals to me and my wife (though mainly me, because she doesn't agree with everything I put in the story), that's all I really strive for.

I know just enough science that I think I understand what he is going to do to make Dipraxa useable. The kitten was not only a good idea to add to their family, it's influence helped solve a problem. Who said kittens aren't essential to life?

Maybe this will become a recurring theme in my stories! Remember how Archie provided inspiration for Alan's invention in What We See?

This is an excellent chapter. He is getting his act together and working again thank to Julie. I watch the first of the series of Godfather of Fentanyl. This mad chemist who seems to have spent a lot of time in prison for manufacturing and selling all kind of drugs seem to be responsible for causing the pain killer epidemic in the US. Have you seen this story about Erik Marquardt?

No I haven't, but I just watched the trailer for it, and it looks good. I'll have to watch it now. Thanks for your good review and the suggestion, Beth.

Sorry for my absence. Helene did a number on Western. N.C. We were spared with a minimal inconvenience. Others (72) are dead, and more than 200 are m.i.a.
As I sit seeing the sun rise, I realize how blessed we were when anything but a few miles North of us aren't there any longer.

I totally agree. We too were spared. Except for 3" of rain, nothing of consequence. Just 50 miles to the west, the devastation begins. Horrible.

Julia is a SAINT. Fran is the BOSS. And Nadia is just plain cute. Although I am new to FanStory and haven't read the prior chapters, I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to the next chapter.

Well, I'm delighted you discovered it, Kahlani. You've come in at the tail end of the story, but I'm glad you have.
I guess you'd call this chapter the climax, and now we've got three chapters of denouement, which I'll be posting over the next week, with the final chapter on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Hooray! With a supportive wife and kitty, Brian is on his way to solving the problem. Nadia has showed him that there is a way to stop repeatedly getting high. (lol) Great chapter!
Question:
I could be remembering wrong but I was sure previously you said it was "calcium channels" but here you say "blocking or blunting the sodium channels that carry pain signals to the brain

Thanks so much, Helen. My daughter has a cat named Nadia, and by extreme coincidence, she is a tortie too.
No, it was always sodium channels.
-
I always thought it was British English to use tortie for calico.
-
Calicos typically have 3 colors including white. Torties have just 2 and lack white.
-
Ah. That's good to know.

Hello Jim,
this was another great chapter. I'm pleased that Julia is in it for the long haul for Brian. Lord knows it would be a temptation to just turn tail and run. I do wonder how they're going to make ends meet if she isn't working, and how long she can stay home with him. I know almost nothing about chemistry, but what you've written about the drugs and how they work sounds feasible. Well done.
Have a blessed evening.

Not to worry; they will figure things out financially, and he won't stay down for long.
You put your finger on my goal here. I have no idea if the idea for the drug would really work. I just wanted it to sound feasible and give it an air of authenticity. But who knows? Maybe I really came up with something, though it would take others to turn it into a reality.
