Congratulations on your All Time Best achievement and then finishing third in the Poem of the Month Contest! It's wonderful that you have this information about your great grandfather. He sounds like a brave and determined man who cared for his family. It's a great achievement that he became a landowner. You can be proud of your family history. I don't know that much about mine. One of my aunts kept track of ancestors on my father's side. Excellent rhyme in this and a wonderful story. judi

Thank you Judi, I just came back from celebrating our family's 113th consecutive family reunion. It was awesome reconnecting with everyone. Of course not everyone attended, still there were about 300 plus who did.

You're welcome. It's wonderful you stay in touch like that. I haven't seen anyone on my father's side of the family for years. You have some great people to remember. judi

This poem about your ancestor is a keeper that reminds those who read it that we come from all over and do what we can. It's now how we begin that counts, but how live and what we leave behind.

What a marvelous rhyming poem to commemorate and celebrate the life of a great man who is part of your heritage. I love how he overcame difficulties and challenges and left a legacy of goodness and kindness in spite of the strong invitation he had in life for bitterness and anger. I'm glad for your whole family and glad for him that he chose the better path. You are all richer for it. God bless you all.

You have a vital story to share. You could investigate further. See what his day to day life might have been like. My family had always been poor sharecroppers. We all love to plant and grow things. I can cook up turnip greens with hamhocks, Butterbeans with ham and a big mess of cornbread. Yes indeedy I am Southern! Karen

We southern women love to feed our men. Someday i'll tell you about my pies and cobblers.:-)

I would love to hear about them. The thought of tasting them is even more exciting.

I can also make the best cheesecake you have ever wrapped your lips around,
That and my green pea salad was always asked for wherever I went. There were never any leftovers. That's a mark of god eating! Karen

Thank you for this inspiring story. What a remarkable man! I'm wondering if you have written a book about him and your ancestors. Yes, their gift was definitely passed on to you. Well done!

Thank you. I am writing my biography and their story, at least what I know of their story, will be included.

I enjoyed reading this story. It was interesting and very descriptive. I'm glad he didn't die as a slave. I wonder how some people thought slavery was okay. The poem was well.written. Great job.

A beautiful tribute to your Great Grandfather and your ancestral family. It's very important to remember them as they now look down and remember you. Looking after their graves and honoring them brings their lives to your memories. K xx

I feel a very strong attachment to the memories their stories engender. Most especially as my family prepares to celebrate our 116th consecutive reunion.

I think every immigrant who came to this country to start a new life deserves as many accolades and standing ovations as they can get. Crossing the ocean and starting fresh isn't easy at any time and then to be faced with slavery and hatred is another factor. You've written a wonderful tribute and should be so proud.

Thank you, and yes I am proud. In an upcoming autobiography the whole story will expose my roots that come from not only Madagascar, but the US Virgin Islands of St. Thomas as well.

Good luck!
