It's a shame it couldn't stay peaceful, and perhaps their dad could have an accident and shoot himself, LOL. I have this nasty feeling that the peace they are experiencing will disappear in the morning. So, where did he go with that gun? I've got another chapter to read, so I'm off now! :)) Sandra xxx

Thank you, Sandra. He probably did go off into the woods to go hunting, but used it as an excuse to get away from the family. Lol. Thank you so much for this. Gretchen

Hello Gretchen,
I'm glad the boys got a reprieve from the anger that their father seems to carry with him constantly. I'd love to be able to pick some blackberries. There were tons of them by the railroad track down in Charleston, but I had heard that the railroad sprayed the tracks to keep the weeds down, so we never picked them unfortunately. There were a bunch at a friends house in Sequim Washington too, but the bushes were all covered with spider webs, so I never picked those either.
I wonder where their dad was that he came home in such a good mood. It's hard to imagine he was up to anything good. Well done gal.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Thank you, Tom. I think people who pick Blackberries should be combat pay. This prickly bushes are no joke. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Even in this idyllic scene, you manage to give us such a sense of foreboding, Gretchen. This is so well written to build the tension between the rest of the family and Daddy. I fear this is only a brief respite and that they will soon come under the yoke of his wrath again.
And the only time we see him behaving decently is because he wants to have sex that night. What a total heel you have created with that character.
Looking forward to seeing if the boys, or Huck anyway, will at some point stand up to Daddy. Great writing. - Jim

Well, that compliment over the cobbler has gotten the rusty bed springs going! I don't know much about the rest of the book but I like the relationship of the brothers. It sounds like Huck has more sense than Dewey but seems to be a caring big brother who isn't going to try to explain the metaphor of the mountain to him.

This is a wonderful time for them when they are picking blackberries. I remember coming home from blackberry picking with poison ivy. Anyway, they should maybe worry with their father comes home without any game and he is nice to their mother. Very strange.

I seriously doubt he was hunting. Just looking for mischief. Thank you so much for this nice review. Gretchen

Yes, daddy might interrupt things, but God allows the devil to shape, he makes bends in the road, one of the paradoxes I've discovered in life, God rules the roost, but we decide what and whom we serve, God is ultimately good, I think Dewey and Huck are finding, a godly mother shows the way, beautifully written Gretchen, blessings Roy

From the pleasures of simple living and cobbler, to listening to the sound of "rusty bed springs" while the folks make baby number three.
Makes one wonder what got into the father character?

I have a feeling this is the calm before the storm. You're doing a great job telling this story.
I think I could stay here forever," he sighs. (forever." He sighs. Sigh isn't a speech tag.

Poor Huck; the perfect day ruined by them damn grown-ups in the next room.
You painted such a lovely picture of a perfect day for two simple boys who want only to have no hassles. Even they understand that it's temporary, but they take the happiness as it comes.
Excellent work, Gretchen. xoxo
