I see why this story captured your attention. It's like a little puzzle with deeper meanings when you think about it. I loved the idea that she wanted her husband to be cared for even if "one extra person" got the same loving attention. Gives a reader something to think about!

I never knew Walt Whitman wrote stories. Always thought of him as a famous poet. I am glad that you shared this lovely romantic, yet sad story with us. I appreciate it very much.

This is an endearing story filled with grief and sadness. Although this is fiction, I expect there have been many people who have not known exactly where their loved ones were buried. I enjoyed your version of this touching story, love Dolly x

This is a moving story! And you retold it very well. Perhaps in not knowing, we also can spread more love around the world.
One minor comment:
It was [ as] if she was trying to adorn both the graves

Thank you for sharing this beautiful romantic story with us. I enjoyed reading. It is a tale of unconditional love. That's the best kind.
one, then stand back to assess her work and then move to the other and do the same there. It was if she was trying to adorn both the graves equally.. (space needed after the period 'there. It' & one period at after 'equally.' is enough)
"Good Morning! May I know whose graves they are that you tend so lovingly?"I asked her softly (space needed aftter the quotation mark)
"My husband's". She mumbled (period inside the quotation mark and lower case 's' on 'she')
"My husband's". Came the terse reply . (period inside the quotation marks and lower case 'c' on 'came and move ending period closer to 'reply.')
I'm just going to enjoy the read from here on, but similar mistakes are made throughout. Please check the rules on writing dialogue. Also check your placement of periods after sentence.)

A touching story indeed. I love Walt Whitman's poems, and never knew he wrote short stories, thank you for educating me. I loved your rendition and will seek to find more short stories by this writer.
