Steve, this is a very well-written short poem. The message is very much on point for a lot of old coots like me. At this point in my life, memories are all that are left, and if some can stir long-ago emotions, all the better. Congratulations on the win! Terry.

Terry, many thanks for the review and sorry for the late reply.

I revently saw a Facebook post that went something like this...
No one who can read can ever complete the job of cleaning out an attic!

    Very true.

Congratulations on the win. This is highly emotive, and your use of alliteration is stunning. Your metaphor is sustained throughout, and I am struck by the impact of your four finely penned lines.

Hi Steve,
This is a nicely written poem about what you may find in an attic that brings back old memories.
I have never been in an attic. We never had an old enough house or enough stuff to need to clutter up an attic with.
Though we do have a crawl space but periodically we clean it by getting a dumpster and filling it up with those things we feel we don't need anymore.
Congrats on winning the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Have a great week.
Joan

    Hi, Joan.

I don't think I've ever had an attic either, but I certainly know how to clutter up whatever storage space I do have.

Thanks for the review and apologies for the very late reply.

Don't mention it, Steve. I think we all do. That's what spring cleaning is for.
    No apologies necessary.

Hope that means we'll all soon be seeing lots of new poems from my favourite Kiwi poet. Have you taken some time away from the site, I've not read any of your work in ages. Hope all is well.

Hi, Bob. Thanks for the kind words.
Yeah, I haven't been here much this year - I think this may be my 5th or 6th poem so I may even get a ranking! The muse hasn't been helpful for some time and life inexplicably has been busy so I just pop in from time to time and see if there's a contest worth entering.

But yes, life is pretty good. Anne and I have been planning a bit of a rod trip to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary - all happening in July, smack bang in the middle of winter, so of course we are going to the beach - three beaches actually!

My wife and I celebrate 50 years in August, though we did have an eight year break mid-stream, divorced and then remarried. So it's almost as good as your celebration. Congratulations on a fantastic achievement.

A dramatic 4 line poem, Steve, and I love it. Sometimes memories pop out that we don't realise we had stored away bringing back the emotions that cvomes with them. A great read, and good luck in the contest.

Thanks, Valda. Don't let me near a box of old photos (or a computer folder full of them!)

I enjoyed this, Steve. Every so often I like to go through boxes of stuff I've saved up in the attic. It always brings fond memories of past enjoyable times in my life. Over the years, as we have moved several times, we have condensed this down to just a few boxes in which we've saved the best memories. My wife and I have a box of old letters to each other we've been promising to read through together. Some of them are pretty hot, from what I recall.

I think we may both be from the last generation that wrote letters! I sure hope nobody has saved any of mine, although I do have one amusing one that I wrote to my parents from boarding school. It reveals that I had had my teeth smashed out by a cricket ball, something the school had neglected to tell them about!

But yes, photos and old documents are great for stirring up a few emotions. Thanks for the thoughtful words. And good luck when you two dig into that trove of love letters.

    SteveVery true on all counts.

Looking at old items, photographs and yesterday's memories has a profound effect on us. I have a problem throwing away things with good memories and so the junk accumulates. A fine post Steve, love Dolly x

Very true on all counts! At least photos can all be stored on line now, although perhaps that may be just another kind of junk if you don't have a good system of organising them.
    Thank you.
