You certainly were adventurous here Liz, and your stitched up knee sounded very painful and that teacher who had no empathy for the children sounds like Miss Trunchbull. Thank you for your delightful review. I begin writing this over 20 years ago so some of the stuff I'm reading I go I don't remember that happening but I'm winding some of the more current stuff in with it. Plymouth

OUCH! What an unfortunate and painful way to hurt your knee.
Well, yeah. Sliding down the rail good way to rip stitches out of your knee.
The "T" in "The having to go up" paragraph should be moved one space to the left so paragraph not indented. So does the "At other times" paragraph.
"one fall" should be one Fall.

Hi Liz, not all childhood memories are good or remembered fondly.
Sadly, you know this first hand. I would have thought that, living through the time period that you did, children would have been kinder, but I guess that bullies have existed since the beginning of time.
Of special note:
--most boys were down on the ground with trucks and cars having fun.
(My 4-year old granddaughter would rather play with her brother's cars and trucks, then with her dolls, etc. The cars are more exciting.)
--without thinking, jump off the railing. I could feel my stitches ripping out.
(Ouch. That had to have hurt. I'm wincing my eyes.)
--The having to go up and down the ladder in the barn where the abuse occurred,
(Liz, you have made reference to the abuse, but have you ever written about it?)
--I froze everytime and began to cry.
(And rightfully so.)
--I had previously believed only crabby grandmothers drank tea and listened to records on the real wind-the-handle phonograph player,
(Good imagery. I could see it. Also, the wind-the-handle phonography player would be a real treasure to have in today's world, especially should the day come when our electric grid gets hacked.)
-- I think it may be genetic, my own sister Cassie doesn't, nor hasn't throughout our lifetime, spoken to me more than a few sentences at a time.
(I think you dad forgot to give her the memo ... Family is family, and we stick together. If someone does something to my brother/sister, then they are doing it to me, and watch out ... we are ALL coming for you.)
The trials and tribulations of childhood can be scarring for life.

Thank you for your compassionate review. yes these kids actually had parents who were adult bullies so that goes back one more generation.
If I haven't told about the abuse in the barn it's in my notes for further on.

I think this covered much more than the stitched and unstitched knee events. I'm sorry that you and sister have been out of touch. Was that aunt related to your mother or father? Glad that reconciliation happened even if it took thirty-four years.

Thank you for your involved review. That was my father's sister. My sister and I make nice on Facebook every so often with very few comments. Then I don't hear from her for 3 months. It's really sad but I send a good energy and whatever if she would receive it. I don't even know if she would receive it. Hopefully we can make it up in another lifetime. I do think has to do with something from the past lifetimes though. To come into this life with a chip on her shoulder about me right from the very beginning is kind of odd.

I love this kaleidoscope of memories that spill out with the good mixed with the bad, as is the case in life itself. My wife often speaks of the ice cart, an iconic piece of Aussie history. As I lived most of my childhood in England, we seldom had need of additional cooling when I was growing up!

This is a good story. I enjoyed it. That knee injury sounds really painful. I remember the iceman. I'm not sure we got a refrigerator until I was ten years old.

Looking back it seemed a lot of stuff happened to me, although I had to be an old lady to fall on icy gravel and remove all skin and ligaments from a knee. Your dad doesn't sound like an easy person to live with, and a thieving cousin wasn't much fun either.

Thank you for your review, which kind of reinforces stuff. My father wasn't much to live with but he wasn't around very often. He came in late at night, drunk and my mother had to get up and feed him & anyone he may have dragged in. In the morning he was still in bed by the time I got up. And on days off he would play golf and he wouldn't come home till late at night.
On any hours he was home, he was belittling. So he wasn't much of a father.
