This is a good story about a young lady deciding on her own fate. Why would she want to marry an old man when a young one was offered? It might be a matter of money, which could come back to bite her later if young man needs a well-to-do bride.

I suppose the reader's answer to her question would be the yellow rose since he isn't as old as her suitor with the red rose. But who is to know who is the best one for her or any of us when it comes to age, my answer would be to keep looking and don't settle for someone because they have a particular color of rose.

Very nice artwork, zanya. I like your profile pic, too. You wrote a good story with a good topic. I like the time period you chose with Lady Amanda wearing her bonnet and waiting for a prospective husband who is quite a bit older than she is. I like your description of her being indignant. Good for her!!

She has a mind of her own, and was taken not only by the yellow roses, but the man who was holding them. You do a good job of leaving the story open ended so we will have to decide whether she got on the train or not. I like the question at the end, and maybe she was thinking of those yellow roses and golden locks.

Very well done; good luck in the contest.

Ahhh, the color of love sounds to be yellow! If the red rose carrier won't do it, go for the yellow and the gorgeous bearer of the rose.

Well written and engaging.

Take care,
Rhonda

So there was no man at the station with graying temples and carrying a red rose? And apparently no female that this young man with golden locks was seeking? Then perhaps these two were meant to find each other. Best wishes for your entry.

Hi Zanya, your story has good sensory appeal, and I could see the entire train scene. I like the twist at the end of the story. I almost thought that Amanda's was going to kiss the man who was carrying the yellow rose.
Embarrassing moments happen. Well done. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. Margaret ~ LateBloomer

Does make one wonder, doesn't it? I enjoyed reading this contest entry. You have all the required elements, character, problem, and solution. Good luck with contest.

'At twenty-one I am too young for greying temples,' she thought. (thought is often in italics and wondering too))

You have good use of onomatapoetic words. This leads to a good question: " She caught sight of a man carrying a yellow rose. No greying temples. Just golden locks and a determined gait." What is the color of love ?' she wondered." At her rate she's never going to find anybody.

Zanya, this is very well written and presented very colorfully. I think the answer to your question could be greying temples. That's the problem; there is no one answer and that's also the fun of love. I enjoy reading you a 100-word story.

Best wishes

Alex

You have crafted an interesting story set in an era of the past. It sounds like Amanda wasn't interested in gray temples and a red rose. Her preference was someone else's suitor. She looked around and saw the platform almost empty, meaning no other young lady was present, so the yellow rose man could think he was to meet her. Love is the color of the two people who find each other. Interesting. Best wishes in the contest.
