We all hide sometimes in a dark corner not wanting to come out. I'm glad you wrote yourself a little dark humor. We all need to see the light, for from darkness comes light. Thank you for sharing your light. Take care of yourself. God bless you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I, too, loss my younger sister last year and understand your pain. You've just done a wise thing by writing and posting something humorous. At eight o'clock, Rick will be in for another surprise. Haha!

I am sorry for yours, too. You do understand. And thank you for your comments.
My sister and I lived miles apart but talked on the phone every day, sometimes twice, and I miss those wonderful, long talks. Her death was sudden and has really left a hole in my life. It's funny, though, in the midst of sorrow to be able to think of something silly and funny. I have to say, it does help.

Hello Katharine,
I'm glad you took a few minutes to think about something other than your loss. We can only dwell on the unpleasant for so long before it takes a terrible toll. This was cute gal. Well done.
Have a blessed day.

thanks, Tom. I have good and bad days, as you can imagine. Got that silly idea and just felt a little humor was a good thing.
When is your trip?? I forgot.

In a few weeks. I hope the weather back East calms down. If I want lousy weather I can stay here. It snowed a little again last night. If spring doesn't get here soon, we'll all go nuts.
-
I don't blame you. We've been having great Spring weather, lots of sunshine and flowers, but last night we had a regular storm - rain and high winds, and today's chilly. Got the hear on.
Go outside and do a little sun dance:)
I'll do one with you - right. I'm so limber.

Hello Pome Lover, this is a very cute story. During the Eclipse, the animals did become confused. In the Dallas Zoo, an ostrich layed an egg during the period of darkness. I hope that Rick has his swim. Well done.

Margaret, a few years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night hearing splashing in my pool. I peeked thru the glass door and there were 5 racoons swimming and playing and getting out and jumping in. I carefully cracked the door open to take a picture, but they vanished. They were fun to watch.

I was so sorry to hear you'd lost your sister. I lost my sister to a sudden heart attack when she was 67. It is hard to deal with these losses. As you write, we need a break away from them. I enjoyed your story very much, Dad is easily tricked by Oliver the owl. He and the kids will think the owl is some kind of magician. If he just gives it a bit of thought, he'll get it. judi

thanks, Judi. Some days I'm so down, and then with the eclipse, I just had a silly idea and said what the heck? Sometimes a little humor helps.
I'm sorry about your sister, too. It is hard. and so final.

I know how you feel. It's good to look for a little bit of humor. I loved watching the eclipse. judi

it was so cloudy, here I decided not to try; went back to ironing blouses. Decided to look outside, and looked out on the patio, and it was pitch dark, at about 1:45- which was pretty neat.
"what did you do during the eclipse?"
I ironed 5 shirts, of course! :)

I got a laugh out of this short short story. It was cute and fun, and I loved the ending where Rick was coming to see dark that night. I hope you are feeling okay. I know this is a tough time for you. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Thanks, Jessi, for your kind concern and best wishes. I have my ups and downs. A little humor helps, sometimes.

Katharine,
Okay, I'm coming in late, so I was enjoying this silly piece-- until I got to the very end and your note about "a short break from sadness". Now you have me worried! Are you okay? I'm gonna say a prayer and wait anxiously until I hear back. So HURRY. Yeah?
As for your short, animal-filled, fun piece of personified madness... fun, fun, fun! I enjoyed this alliteration FEAST. *smile* (Fav. line: "Pauline Possum appeared perturbed.")
Other things I liked:
--> when you chose a word for a speech tag besides 'said', you used 'squeaked'. Nice!
--> you picked some really hard-working verbs here--rushed, sputtering, fussing, scrambling,
--> as well as a great adjective -- perturbed
Now, you know me. I'm gonna offer you a couple thoughts. In this particular case, I'm pretty sure that each of the items below are rather subjective. So feel free to take 'em or leave 'em. They may be the 'more appropriate' version - but since this is an informal, fun piece - what does that matter, right? *smile*
Okay:
1.) "Hey, Pauline, cool, huh?
--> "Hey, Pauline! Cool, huh?
2.) Just as Rick and fam started looking up
--> abbreviations are generally discouraged in prose
3.) "Wow," Rick said, scrambling out of the pool(.)
4.) "You kids don't wanta come, okay,
--> I think 'wanna' would be the more widely accepted informal reduction
As you can see, there's nothing earth-shattering, and certainly nothing to detract from your rating. Thanks for the smile. Happy week!

well, thanks, Teach. Much appreciated.
Sadly my precious sister died March 22. We talked on the phone every day for years and I miss her like crazy. She lived in SC out in the country on a beautiful horse farm, by herself, and had a heart attack. She did have presence of mind to call 911, but they took so long getting there, she had another one. They found her on the floor with her dog beside her. We were only 22 months apart, and I, being the oldest, thought I'd go first.
Anyway, for some reason, eclipse day, I thought of this silly piece.

Oh, no... I'm so sorry.

thank you

thanks, Dolly. I bet they probably did. It was cloudy at my house so I gave up , but it did get pitch black dark.

Such fun! I was beginning to get eclipse fatigue when this came along and tickled my funny bone!
Super clever...
I'm so glad you are holding fast to your smile in the midst of loss.
Prayers continue!

I really liked this story. The animal characters are so whimsical, and of course you tied it into current events. The ending is great.
I have a few suggestions for your consideration, mostly punctuation.
I like this middle-of-the-day-dark.
(I like this middle-of-the-day dark.)
Rick, I hate to rain on your parade, son
(Capitalize Son when used in place of a name. EG: I consider you my son, Son.)
Oliver flew down and with his strong wings, knocked them
(...flew down and, with his strong wings, knocked...)
They came up, sputtering
(No comma)
Oliver said, and flew back
(No comma. If you had said "and he flew back" then the comma would be correct)
Rick said, scrambling out of the pool, "Move it,
(...pool. "Move...")
Fantastic story that was truly a delight to read!
