This just rocked me, the whole thing. What a brave couple. I so admire the depth of courage in both of them. Praying for the days ahead. Thank you for sharing, my friend.
Blessings abundant,
Sal Xos

Thank you so much, Sal, for this wonderful review! The outpouring of Navalny's people gave the world some hope. I just pray that Yulia can sustain the momentum. A huge ask but, if anyone's up for the challenge, she is! In 2006 in London, an ex-Russian spy, Alexander Litvinenko, was poisoned and died after radiation poisoning. His wife, Marina, fought tirelessly against Putin and the Russian state for justice and compensation and continues to be a vocal critic. Days before her husband died, he wrote that, unless Putin was stopped, he would go on to wage devastating wars. Meanwhile, London, in particular, allowed Russian money and corruption to pour into the capital! Talk about sleep-walking into this crisis! Thank you again, Sal. Debbie xo

Once again, this topic is so very sad. Your poem addresses it beautifully, as do your copious and thorough notes. *sigh*
"And all the while, she knew first-hand the torture he defied,
though split apart, she gave him hope that she was at his side.
And when the dreaded news was out that he had passed away,
she held back tears and stunned with speech of fearlessness that day."

Thank you so much, Deborah, for your exceptionally kind review which is an honour to receive from you! We can only hope that the momentum from the funeral is now a lasting one in Yulia's hands. A huge ask which even she acknowledges. Take care Debbie

Debbie, I'm in agreement with everything you expressed. This is beautiful and also chilling, about Putin. I just wanted you to know I appreciate this high art work you created! Maddy

I am always impressed when individuals put their lives on the line for causes. Few people will, as is established by the failure of citizens to rise up against genocide in many cases. When the threat is death, people become obedient. After all, they don't have resort to the ruthless use of power and poison that autocrats and sadly, other leaders have. So when a hero is assassinated, and his widow stands up to the murderer who is responsible, she evinces incredible bravery. Even if she is brave from the clearly uncertain safety of another country. More often than not, heroes will perish and the mad dogs of history will only be ousted by war.

Thank you so much, Frank, for this kind and very thoughtful review! Some people have felt that Navalny brought it on himself by returning to Russia but the point is these were his people he was advocating for and he always preferred to do it in his own country rather than outside. That must have made some difference. If everyone was deterred by the threat of death (as most are) no one would ever stand up to Putin. How Yulia goes about this, remains to be seen but I'm sure she'll remain a thorn in his side especially with the election approaching. We've got to hope so because she's the only one.

Hi Debbie,
This is a well rhymed and metered story poem about a brave couple who fight for what they believe. If they became the leaders instead of Putin, there would be no Ukraine and much more things different.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Enjoy the rest of your day and week
Joan

Such bravery this couple has shown to the world and now she has to travel that rocky road without him. This was well written Debbie. You show how steadfast she's always been and will continue to be. Very well said.
Cheers

I was wondering when you would do one of these on Yulia!
I must tell you I'm afraid for this woman as she continues her husband's fight for changes in Russia.

She's as fearless as her husband was, and his eventual demise was inevitable.

Beautifully done and worded, Debbie! Best, JohnC

Thank you so much, John, for this kind and thoughtful review which I greatly appreciate! I think she will get the best advice and protection possible and Putin might just realise that, having blood on his hands for this particular celebrity, could be the very last straw for the opposition and the West. She's survived so far being an activist for her husband and their cause. We can only hope she can continue to make her voice heard. A single voice can still move mountains. Thank you so much, John. So true, unfortunately! That Putin is giving us short guys a bad name! I am thankful not only that you wrote this opus, but that we both have the freedom in our land to express our viewpoint and not be murdered for it.

Thank you so much, Jim, for your kind and thoughtful review! Do you know, I heard the other day that Napoleon wasn't in fact a short man at all, but normal height. It was the British who lampooned him as short in cartoons and this stuck. So it just goes to prove that we can't believe anything we read in history:)) And, after all, what about Tom Cruise? (Better to think of him than the one who doesn't deserve a name!) Take care Debbie

Your very polished poem is a touching tribute to this strong and determined woman. In a world where evil seems to rise to power far too often, it's good to have stories like this shared so we can have hope that good people are still out there making a difference.

Thank you so much for your kindness and support! I've been reading about some of the last few words he shared and you hit the nail on the head when you mention 'hope' because this remained so strong particularly with Navalny who, apparently posited (some of his last few words) that, if South Korea and Taiwan were able to make the transition from dictatorship to democracy, perhaps Russia could too. We've got to keep that hope alive. Take care Debbie

Debbie, I loved your poem. It is so powerful. They both are so courageous. Putin is evil and needs to be taken down. Her husband had so much strength to go against Putin. Thank you for writing about her. It was very interesting. The video at the end was a nice addition. Excellent job!
