This is an emotionally charged chapter. I kept thinking Emma's father would pull through. She has been through so much already. Thankfully, Seth will be a huge support for her. Excellent dialog and descriptions make this realistic.

I wish I had a six. This was touching and I kept having to wipe my eyes. The death scene was done without being contrived or overly dramatic. It was handled with dignity and realism. Great chapter but heartbreaking. Gretchen

Barbara, This is a really great chapter you have penned. You used great heartfelt and descriptive words. Of course, Calhoun would show up where he is really not needed. Thank you for sharing! Great job. love and blessings, Teri

The chapter is written well, but it is very sad. It is hard to say a lot. There was a lot of sharing among the various characters who were either at the hospital, or who came and went based on their job obligations. Even Ace felt that something was different.

It is a shame that Mr. Winters never saw a doctor. I'm guessing that there are people like that other than ones who can't afford medical care. It is so hard for the family, too. I was surprised that Calhoun showed up.

I wonder if it was hard to write the final scene. You did a good job it and captured the emotions of it, as well.

Some can afford medical care, but don't trust doctors. Thank you for the kind review. The last scene was hard to write, it took days and nights.

You make a good point about some not trusting doctors. You are welcome for the review, and I imagine it was very hard to write. It was hard to write a review because of Mr. Winters' death. It will be interesting to see the direction you take things.

When you bring a tear to my eye, you get six stars. Every story usually has a bump in the road somewhere, but this was a big old Maine pot hole.

This chapter gave me much to which I could relate. Emma's father giving his blessing. My mom had a major heart attack in the late 80s and lived for 30 years after. I remember whenever she'd be hospitalized her words truly felt stronger. I could relate to the other guy grabbing Emma's arm. She was strong to set him straight. When I left my violent ex-husband I was 26. Once when we were divorced he tried to talk with me again and grabbed my arm in a public place. That led to a life long restraining order. I think I can relate to many topics due to my younger years. Thank God, all I can relate to now is eating dinner and watching TV work my good husband. lol

I enjoyed your detailed descriptions as always.

Best wishes,

Alexandra :)

Barbara, you don't need any suggestions from me -- this is wonderful. You know how I feel about dropping in on a book -- I wish I could sit longer, but I can't, and these days it's part of the reason I keep my own postings much shorter than I once did.
But lady, you CAN WRITE! The ending of this has me wishing I'd read sooner --

"Susan cried. "What are you saying?"

Keith reached for his daughter's hand. "Emma, come closer. Your mom and I had a perfect marriage. I didn't think life could be any better, but you came into our lives and made it even better. I love you. You brought a bright spot to our life."

"Daddy, why are you talking like this?"

"I needed you both to know how much I love you." Keith closed his eyes.

Within moments the alarms on the machines sounded..." *sigh*

Well, well, well that was quite the dramatic chapter. Must have been one of those widow makers.

Not sure why this arginine character is creeping around with the police so tied in to Emma. Must have a screw loose.

Glad I got a chance to read this. A tree fell on my house and busted up the roof and deck. Been dealing with insurance. Blah!

Great read!

Well, you killed...him, but I guess this would allow Seth to finally propose. Life it's not just joy, death reminds us of the fragility of our passing into the light called life.

Hi there,
Wow - so much happened here. I know it must've been difficult for you to write this. Once you reach a certain point in your life, you reflect on how easy it can all end.
There is great use of dialogue to move the story along and wonderful character development.
Thank you for sharing - I look forward to the next chapter,
~MP~
