I enjoyed reading this story, especially since it was a mix of both truth and fiction. When my husband and I were in San Francisco, we didn't stay at the Majestic Hotel, but I've seen interior pictures. It provides the perfect atmosphere for ghosts stories. and this is a good one.
My only suggestion - dialogue would have added even more interest. Rather than you tell us what the clerk said, you could have had him say it in dialogue.

Yes, interesting. I like that suggestion.
San Fran used to be a gem.

I loved this story. As a muso, how could you not like a ghost that plays the piano? :) I love learning about the history of old buildings and you have to be impressed by a hotel that survived the 1906 earthquake.

I saw you won this one! I knew that was yours. Just had a feeling. Very good! I?m writing a book on ghost stories so always try to go with true or reportedly true that I am putting in there. Glad I placed. Fun contest, my friend!

Ciao mystery writer, you now have 3 votes.
There were some interesting entries but I preferred yours.
Lots of nasty things happen in hotels so I do think old hotels have their share of ghosts, spirits and clients have experienced paranormal activity over the decades.
Old castles and dungeons are infested with spirits too.
I knew where your story was headed from the title yet despite that you keep the narrative engaging.
Best of luck!

Thank you! It is hard to beat fiction with true stories sometimes, but I enjoyed writing it. I appreciate you!

What a mystery story for sure. It would be very frightening to have a room empty and you hear lots of piano music. I would perhaps wonder to what was happening.

It was a creepy moment. . .yet exciting!

Hmmm, mystery, paranormal activity, music, and a suicide on the fourth floor. You've created a good combination of events and storytelling to get the reader to follow along and wonder...could it be her?

Honestly, I?m still not sure what to think about the event. Eerie. Fun contest though. I try to go with true stories for the spooky ones!

Oh that is very grim and disturbing, and you write as if it is a true story, which makes it all the more eerie and compelling. Best wishes for your entry.

Thank you. It is true, which may be why it?s flailing. Regardless, a great and fun contest!

A great story that has this reader wanting to visit room 408.
An easy read with a good pace. Just enough information to place the reader there!
Thank you!

Thanks! Fun contest!

What a wonderful creepy ghost story, and you got to experience it personally! That was fascinating to learn the history of the hotel also. What stories the walls could tell if they could talk! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. The truth is always stranger than fiction!

This sounds like a super contender in the contest it is entered in. I liked reading it, because it reminded me of a Nancy Drew computer game set in San Francisco with a paranormal emphasis. I had not heard of bathtubs overflowing being a sign of ghosts before. One would think it was more of a sign of not cleaning it out often enough. The entire fourth floor had no guests? The story gives a great possible explanation. Or maybe it was someone who needed to practice piano but didn't want to be bothered. Hmm. Quite the story!
