Hello Mary,
I believe your heart was in the right place, in wanting to help out your sister and her children. One of the easiest ways to get into financial trouble though is with a credit card. I suppose it's a common issue for younger people, and some who should know better, to whip out the card. Personally, I don't want to buy the banker a new house or a nice vacation. I always pay my card off every month and use it only reluctantly. Thanks so much for sharing.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

When Joey lined up those eggs against his mother's back and woke her up, I thought she was going to roll onto them.

It's easy to run up CC debt. Been there...

My first credit card was a stores card, Bambergers (now Macys). I think I still have it in a drawer, probably my sock drawer.

Excellent post.
John

Hello, Mary, I can relate to your story in more ways than one. When My kids were little I wanted to get them everything they wanted and I charged it to my credit card. It was bad and after a few years I had health problems and lost my job. My marriage was in the dumps too and eventually we filed bankruptcy.... money and emotional.

I understand how hard it was for you, your sister, and the kids. Divorce is hard for the whole family.

Well done!

It sounds like Joey was an exceptionally naughty boy. It was probably a bid for attention. It must be terribly painful and confusing for children when their parents don't get along. Good writing. I wish you the best in the contest.

All of my life I have had to be very careful with my money and I have never run up a huge charge bill for Christmas or any other holiday to give gifts. When I give gifts at Christmas time they are gifts that I have already paid for and I do not go on my charge card unless I can pay for it at the end of the month. Patricia

Oh boy, sounds like the son needs an attitude adjustment. Your story about getting your first credit card was interesting. It sounds like a major accomplishment during that time. Also, being able to help your sister is admirable. Good story. However, Joey is another issue, lol.

The story is well-written and I can identify with those first years of being able to actual purchase Christmas gifts on a pay-later plan!! I am curious as to what Joey is up to today and how your sister is doing. Sounds as if Joey was in need of a few extra hugs -- maybe from dad. Thanks for posting. ann

Actually he went to live with his dad when he was 16. He is doing fine with a family of his own. My sister is retired and going strong at 82

This is a great Christmas story, Mary!

Little Joey seems quite the character, and you must be correct about him seeking attention.

The eggs lined up across your sisters back is a prank I must try! Haha. Yes, I too missed the part about naughty and nice.

Best, JohnC

This story is one that I can get behind as it is how managed to start each new year out deep in a financial hole which represented one or all of my relations.

I think I purchased my share of "Evening in Paris" and white handkerchiefs too. I never did have a charge card until much later in life, thankfully I had grown to realize that you can't buy the gifts that really matter. Your story was a delight to read. Joey was a naughty one, wasn't he?

Thank you Ginda for your wonderful review. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Joey had his moments. He grew to be a good man although I think he has some resentment for my sister leaving his dad.
