Oh my, that is a very sad ending indeed in your notes.
I know they are fighting it hard these days and beat a lot of them, minus pancreatic, which is a killer.

My husband was going through cancer treatment at the same time as my student. It hit me all really hard. My husband is cancer free. It all just broke my heart.

I had been a teacher, most often, of children and teens with special needs. Some were medically challenged and were sick or near death. Disease should not be allowed to strike children. My own husband faced cancer at one year old. This is a good post that does honor your former student and gives her a voice.
You're a good teacher.
